African states divide over preparations for the next pandemic : Jenny Lei Ravelo / DEVEX

Article shared by Tom McDermott

Excerpts:
"Sources close to the talks tell my colleague Jenny Lei Ravelo that a few African countries have sided with the European Union’s proposed text on pathogen access and benefit-sharing. They also agreed to the hotly contested “mutually agreed terms” provision on technology transfers, which typically flow from high-income to low-income countries, giving wealthier countries leverage to negotiate terms that are more beneficial to them.

“Others are saying they have betrayed continental interests,” one insider tells Jenny. “They might just not understand the wide scale implications of agreeing to EU positions too early."
