Indo-Japanese XUNICEF Mini-Reunion, Tokyo, 22 March 2024 : Girija Devi

Left to Right : Ms.Devika Kapur, Mr. Kazou Inoue, Ms.Girija Devi, Ms.Renu Ghosh, Dr.Eimi
Watanabe, Mr. Yoshiro, Mr. Augustine Veliath, Ms. Shikha Wadhwa and Ms.Pallavi Chaturvedi ( daughter of Renu Ghosh).

A small group of ex unicef retirees had a memorable get-together with Dr. Eimi Watanabe, Mr. Kazou Inoue and Mr. Yoshiro at Tokyo during a 11 day tour of Japan. It was wonderful meeting after so many years reminiscing about the time spent together and being grateful, as Eimi put it “ for the good years, some of which we had spent together being a community and sharing a sense of purpose”.

We had a bird’s eye view of Japan, its people, its culture through our whirlwind tour visiting all the major places in Tokyo, Hakone, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Osaka.

Japan is famous for the Sakura ( cherry blossom season in Spring), its parks, shrines, technology, the Shinkansen bullet rains, the robots and electronic wares, the tea ceremony, the Peace Memorial at Hiroshima, the traditional arts and crafts of Kyoto region, to name a few. But the gifts and souvenirs we have taken from this country is the deep sense of professionalism, the kindness, courtesy and warm-hearteded-ness of the common man in the street.

  1. Good to see a group visiting Japan. Haven't seen Kazuo, Eimi and Yoshi for a long time. I met my Japanese JPO of 1990-1993 over dinner yesterday. We were reminiscing about the good times in India, including the ICDS and Orissa. Rie Hiraoka is doing a year long Visiting Scholar at the Asia Pacific Research Center at Stanford University after almost 20 years in ADB.
