From Your Editors, week 21-28 April 2024

As we are going to press, the Malta Reunion is in full swing. First reports have it that hundreds (well, more than 100) former staff members, spouses and offspring have been found waiting at the immigration queue. Meanwhile, several XUNICEF editors have been sighted, evidently exhausted from the celebrations and proceedings, too tired to share selfies or groupies (?). We wrap ourselves in patience and wait for the stories, which we will post in the coming week. Stop press!:  See the first few photos we have received from participants. We look forward to more.

The situation in Gaza remains the topic of the week. UNICEF staff member Tessa Ingram shares her experience of coming under fire;  the independent review of UNRWA has come out. Check out also the other stories.

Debt: The Global South now repays more in debt than it gets in grants and loans. According to the World Bank, instead of money flowing into global south nations, a net $21.4 billion is projected to have flowed out in 2023.  And $50.5 billion more is expected to depart this year.

Food crisis: Globally, more than 281 million people in 59 countries faced high levels of acute food insecurity according to the Global Report on Food Crises. Sudan had largest number of people facing extreme food shortages in 2023.

EPI turns 50: Robert Cohen reminded us that the Expanded Programme of Immunization is 50 years old. A new study, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), shows that immunization is the single greatest contribution of any health intervention to ensuring babies not only see their first birthdays but continue leading healthy lives into adulthood. And a new oral Cholera vaccine has received WHO pre-qualification.
