Amnesty Australia Briefing with Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur.

Article and video shared by Carina Prakke

The briefing discussed: Francesca’s role; which involves monitoring and documenting violations of international law as an independent expert, and presenting these reports to the United Nations Human Rights Council;

* Amnesty’s work to gather testimony, and source, examine and verify human rights violations through the Crisis Evidence Lab — including images of weapon remnants, satellite imagery, and video footage of airstrikes and other attacks;
* The role of the international community in the supply of ammunition and weapons that's deployment has led to the death of 250 people a day - 70% women and children;
* The requirement for accountability from the International Criminal Court, and the overdue decision by national courts to investigate crimes of genocide - “There should be a serious investigation now to determine individual liability...not only of those who ordered this mass killing, this mass destruction, but those who executed. Because there is no excuse and no statutory limitation for genocide”; and
* The role the media plays in shaping public opinion -“The sanitisation of language is unprecedented”.

"We collected as much evidence as was available…I've interviewed victims, I've interviewed survivors, I've travelled also to interview kids without limbs… I’ve heard their stories, which are just a tiny fraction of what has happened to Gaza”
Francesca Albanese
