I was encouraged with the last Soliloquy when a few readers commented on the column related to philatelic materials issued for IYC. This week I continue with the series featuring stamps and covers issued by countries starting with the letter M.
With the increased violence towards children that we are currently witnessing including in Gaza, West Bank, Sudan,Myanmar, Congo etc.it is perhaps useful to remind ourselves of the promises and plans that the IYC spawned all around the world and to surmise how quickly matters have degenerated in these conflict areas so that the messages of peace, human rights, child rights and development need to be reactivated and reemphasized.
We start with this stamp from the Malagasy Republic (Madagascar) which shows a boy and two girls with books, toys and fruits in their hands.The banner at the bottom is inscribed with IYC in Malagashe and French.
This is the First Day Cover of the same stamp. There is no cachet. The post mark is dated 1 June 1979 and is issued from Antananarivo.
From Malawi we have this four stamp set, three of which are showing individual children while the fourth shows a group of children.
The Republic of Malaysia issued this three stamp set for IYC. The first stamp is the IYC emblem, the second shows a globe and five children in front and the third many children at play.
The small Maldive Islands are among those countries that issued many stamps for IYC. This four stamp set shows a girl with her toy bear, a boy constructing a model spaceship, a boy with a sail boat and another flying a blimp as a kite.
This set also from Maldives continues with the topic of postal services acted out by cartoon characters.
A nice set of three stamps from the Republic of Mali was issued for IYC. The stamps show the IYC emblem with a child praying, a girl and a boy scout with a peace dove and
a farmer, his son with a calf.
The same set is shown here on a First Day Cover. The cachet shows a young boy with an unusual hairdo. The post mark is dated 7 May 1979 and was issued from Bamako.
This is another FDC with the same three stamps but there is no cachet.The two post marks, one on the stamps and the other separate are also dated 7 May 1979 and were issued in Bamako, Mali.
I was lucky to find this set of the same three stamps from Mali but in imperforate form as it is quite rare, especially for commemorative stamps for IYC.
5855:From the island of Malta (where we will be attending the next XUNICEF Reunion in April) comes this cute set of three stamps issued for IYC. With a background of graph paper the stamps show a girl and boy standing over the globe, three children flying their kites, and a large number of children of different nationalities holding hands in a rectangular format.
5856: The same three stamps are here on a FDC from Malta. The cachet is quite elaborate showing the IYC emblem in the middle of a circle, with another circle of children holding hands and the inscription of IYC as a third circle, with the date of 13 June 1979. The post mark on the stamps is also dated 13 June 1979 and was issued from Valletta.
The last item is yet another FDC fromm Malta with the same three stamps and a simple cachet showing the IYC emblem. Both post marks oin the stamps and under the cachet are dated 13 June 1979 and the FDC was issued from the Malta Post Office in Valletta, Malta.
