How the UN confirmed its own growing irrelevance : Con Couglin / The Telegraph

Article shared by Lou Mendez

The author, Con Couglin, is Defence Editor for The Telegraph.  He argues that the UN's relevance as a body that can handle global challenges in a fair and balanced manner is increasingly open to question.

Excerpt:

"The failure of the UN to act decisively is yet another example of how the organisation, which was established in the post-war era with the precise aim of preventing future world wars, has lost its authority and credibility just as the threat of war has ramped up."

  1. The UN has many problems which are recognised by most including its staff, not just UN member states. The problems in the UN are its overly complicated bureaucratic procedures, its financial dependence on member states, its ambition of trying to do everything, etc. Nevertheless, it has done many good works especially in low-income countries, which must be appreciated. Sure, there are many areas requiring improvement but UN in its present structure cannot be reformed without totally restructuring including its source of funding. If the UN is restructured it must include a mechanism to make its financing independent.

I don’t want to subscribe to The Telegraph just to read this garbage. The UN cannot prevent wars simply because of the duplicity of UN permanent member states in the UN Security Council. If the country to which this author belongs cannot even call for a ceasefire in Gaza to stop murdering civilians he has no right to say that the UN has lost its credibility and authority. It is the P5 members who have lost credibility for lying and deceit for perpetuating wars and violence forever.

Every war fought since the end of WW-II was based on lies and falsehood promoted by the P5 member countries by totally ignoring the UN charter. It is time for people to talk about the violation of the UN charter by member states rather than pointing at the UN losing its credibility.

    1. It may be more than the UN that will be at risk with another four years of Trump, Putin, Xi, and Modi
