An Invitation to become a reader of Other News : Roberto Savio

Dear Member of XUNICEF

My mane is Roberto Savio, and I jave been for many years a consultant to UNICEF, with a close relationship with Jim Grant, about whom I have edited a widely distributed book ( I hope you got a copy), At that time I was the DG of Inter Press Service, IPS, which I founded in 1964,

Now, I have set up a system of information, which is intended to supplement the daily reading of our favorite newspaper. Media have been markedly reducing coverage on global events and analysis, and giving more and more space to events. This trend, at the same time of the distortion of truth and reality, which infects social media, will see an unpredictable development with the arrival of AI. And, at the same time, we are besieged by an enormous mass of information, that we are unable to process.

Therefore, I have created Othernews, which carries two items per day, five days a week. The material is about global events, from climate change to social injustice, from the power of finance to the crisis of democracy, from the rise of populism and xenophobia, to the decline of multilateralism. The questions that I am sure, many of us share, looking at the present fragmentation of our world, and the loss of values and vision which were the basis of our work.

We have now close to 15,000 readers, from 80 countries in the world.  The service is in English, Spanish, Italian and French, but the material is not translated. Items are not over 1.500 words, and some have been written exclusively for Othernews, while others have been selected from newspapers all around the world. The idea is that you look at the title, and open it if you are interested; otherwise you can ignore it. The reader has access to the data base, which contains lot of data for writing articles or making speeches.

This message is to invite you to become a subscriber and reader of Othernews.  Just send your email to the Secretary of the Association, Marco Piazza, piazzamarco95@gmail.com, and he will put in the reader’ s list, in the language you choose. The service is entirely free of any cost, and you can unsubscribe at any moment, if you find the service not useful. Our hope is to provide you with a window over the world, analyzed with the commitment and spirit in which we worked on our life.

About becoming a 'Member' of Othernews:

In addition to subscribing,  you can also join as a full member.  Othernews is owned by a nonprofit association, open to readers who want to join it. Membership costs 50 euros per year, and members elect the board, approve the budget, and decide the editorial line. The idea is to create a community of readers, going beyond the old debate of public or private property of media. Everybody is a volunteer, except the editor, who receives a modest honorarium. The whole budget is within 15.000 euro, a formula which makes unnecessary external interference, and assure its independence, There are now 150 members, many of whom you would know. Is a mix of international civil servants, academicians, activist from global civil society, and journalists.

I hope you will accept our invitation, and I wish you age best in your present life!
