GAZA
A family and staff of Save the Children, including four young children, have been killed in Gaza during an Israeli airstrike. ED Catherine Russell joined with a message family and friends in mourning. Would this be one of the latest victims? I am afraid not. Following the media, Israel war cabinet is preparing for a prolonged war.

At the UN, the General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, with the US being one of only 10 countries voting against it. This signals increasing international isolation for the US and Israel as the crisis deepens. See analysis here.

Meanwhile, the Israel Foreign Ministry spokes person has criticized UNICEF ED for her delayed condemnation of Hamas’ gender based violence the 7th of October, see link

A powerful and heartfelt appeal to President Biden by the heads of 6 large humanitarian organizations: CARE, Mercy Corps, NRC, OXFAM, Refugee International and Save the Children. Issued on December 11, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of UNICEF, this statement echoes the views and sentiments of many other UN & international relief organizations that are guided by international humanitarian laws and human rights principles. see

James Elder of UNICEF reporting from Gaza, was interviewed on BBC. He said that a "safezone" in #Gaza will ONLY be SAFE when a ceasefire enables aid agencies to provide sufficient resources for the survival of children and families. ie: Water, Sanitation, Medical facilities, food. It's still not happening.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Narges Mohammadi, a jailed Iranian women’s rights advocate, has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and relentless fight for social reform. While behind bars, she was awarded the prestigious prize on Friday for her efforts “to promote human rights and freedom for all”, according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Read about it at this link including the readers’ comments

COP28
A day after COP28 was scheduled to end and following 24 hours of overnight negotiations, the conference ended with a surprise agreement setting out a commitment to "follow climate science to keep global warming below 1.5°C”. It also calls for countries to move to net zero by the year 2050. It marks the first time fossil fuels are explicitly addressed. The language is viewed as important progress.

The XUNICEF Calendar

Do you have an event or meeting you would like to add to the calendar? Let us know by writing to us at xunicef.news.views@gmail.com. Don't forget that we learn of many events after our Weekly Digest has gone out, so please check the calendar during the week to learn of last minute notices.

We depend on your contributions - No, not your money, just your writing, your photos, and your comments. We want to fill our blog each week with material authored by our members, not materials produced by news media. Send to the editors at xunicef.news.views@gmail.com any materials you would like us to share.

What is XUNICEF? - The XUNICEF network exists to keep the UNICEF family (both current and former) in touch. Each year we have a major reunion in a different country. We also have 'mini-reunions' all through the year as our members travel and get together with old friends.

Membership -
XUNICEF membership is open to the wider UNICEF family - current and former staff members, national and international, consultants, contractors, volunteers, and employees of UNICEF national committees  All that is required is a significant association with UNICEF and a continuing commitment to UNICEF's mission.   We have no dues or other fees.   Here is the link to our membership form. Oscar Fernandez is the network administrator for XUNICEF. You can contact Oscar at ofernandez@xunicef.com.

Have you changed your email address? If your contacts have changed, use the same form to update our lists. If you are using a UNICEF or UN email address, remember that you will lose that address when your contract ends. Give us your personal address, so that we do not lose contact.

What is XUNICEF News & Views? -
News & Views (N&V) is the forum for XUNICEF. N&V is a blog and website, on which articles submitted by our members are posted in the order in which they arrive. Especially welcome are articles that stimulate thoughts and discussions among members. This is the platform where former and active colleagues can share their news and opinions with each other. Members may agree - or disagree - on many issues, but the only way to find out is if you share with us what matters to you. We also publish a weekly digest, which is a summary of what we think have been the most important articles of the past week.

Who is on our volunteer team of editors? - Gautam Banerji, Sree Gururaja, Fouad Kronfol, Doreen Lobo, Tom McDermott, Gianni Murzi and Detlef Palm.  Want to join us?  Just let us know.  We are always looking for more members to join the editorial team.  The editors post any submission received from other members, and assist other members in preparing their articles for publication. The editors maintain the technical side of the blog, monitor its use and prepare the weekly digest. They communicate directly with members on technical and administrative issues. They network a lot.

The Daily Email - Members can also subscribe to a daily emailed summary of articles posted in the previous 24 hours. Click here to subscribe.
