What is street photography?
Street photography is about candid situations in public places, is about people or a sense of human presence, it is about a moment that cannot be repeated, a moment when proximity carries a special intimacy between the subject and you, the photographer.
Street photography is about the photographer watching the movie of life that is happening in front of her or him. The photographer ultimately has the right to press the pause button—the camera shutter.
Detlef has selected twelve frames out of my original selection, thinking rightly so that they would be enough, as the emphasis is on each individual photo which we want you the reader to spend time on.
At one early morning time spent putting this feature and text together, I thought I wanted an additional photo included. A frame that I took as a delivery van approached and the driver gave a white polystyrene box full of fresh buffalo milk mozzarella cheese to a waiting happy bystander. I pressed the shutter as the man with the box was juxtaposed to the driver closing the van’s rear door and only his arms were visible.
Real, surreal?
Just a moment like Naples is — real but also surreal.

Cool pictures! Never been to Napoli, but the pictures brought a glimpse of life there. It felt as if I was there.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gianni for the wonderful tour of beautiful Naples through your awesome photography. Now I feel, I don't have to visit Naples. One place less in my bucket list. All the best! 🙏
ReplyDeleteYes, beautifully captured! Been to Napoli many years ago and yes, the small alleys, the life on the street, a mix of realism and surrealism. Thank you!
