LOOK UP! By Myra Rudin

Although New York City is known for its skyscrapers, many folks, tourists and locals alike, only see them from a distance and often miss other places and scenery of interest, or architecture, by not looking up. A good reason for keeping one’s eyes on the ground in this bustling metropolis is to avoid some of the city’s notable findings like broken sidewalks, dog poop, chewing gum, and potholes (where “break a leg” doesn’t mean good luck on Broadway).

Most folks know the top of the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building. But have they checked out the architecture or ceilings in and out of other notable (and less notable) structures ? The new Hudson Yards community of buildings demonstrates how high buildings will go - one called “The Edge” has the highest sky deck in the western hemisphere.

There are many beautiful artworks in and around NYC buildings or simply on your local neighborhood corner. I’ve been making a point of looking up more while walking (after checking the ground first) and have found some new intriguing and interesting spots around the city.

The sky itself can present some interesting patterns when looking up between buildings in midtown, uptown, downtown, or outside the city:

  7. Congratulations ! Lovely collection which brings back nostalgic memories, but also a hearty chuckle. During our stay in the 1970's one of our neighbours, a true "Noo Yawker", asked me; "do you know the difference between a resident and a tourist?" The out of towner looks up at the wonderful sky-scrapers and other amazing scenery, while the resident walks with the head down trying to avoid stepping into the dog poop !
