Missing You: Maryam Farzanegan, RIP - Family and Friends Request Short Videos Honoring Maryam / Memorial Planned for 28 October : Paula Claycomb

The family and friends of Maryam Farzanegan invite XUNICEF members and any current UNICEF to staff to prepare a short video clip honouring Maryam. It should not be longer than 30 seconds, even shorter if possible.

You may make it with your cell phone and send it to Brielle Kinkead at briellekin22@g.ucla.edu . Please put "Tribute to Maryam F." in the Subject Line. Brielle was Maryam's TA at UCLA for many years. She offered to compile all the videos and send the final video to Maryam's friend, Roshanak Aflaki.

As of now, a memorial service is planned for 28 October at the UCLA faculty center (also called club), at 480 Charles E. Young Drive East, Los Angeles, CA 90095.

The time is not yet available. The date may change to 29 October.

Thank you,

    Dear Mehr and Paula,

I too have not come to terms with Maryam’s most tragic and untimely death. She was planning to come and visit me in October and I was so looking forward to it. Alas, it was not meant to be!

Maryam was buried on Saturday 23 September in a very nice cemetery in Santa Monica. She rests in peace under the shadow of a tree.

I got to meet Maryam first in New York when she was working in UNICEF Programme Division in 1990s, but got to know her more closely when she was working in Florence at UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre with Mehr and I was working in Geneva in UNICEF CEE/CIS Regional Office covering Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Throughout the years we kept in touch and much more in the past 18 months after I moved to Southern California where we were physically much closer.

Maryam was a most wonderful and caring human being. Her presence and smile brought happiness to those around her. She touched many lives and her kindness and generosity were legendary. She was very intelligent and curious and loved teaching and working with her students. She was admired and loved by her friends. Maryam was a pillar of support for many who knew her. The world was a much better place with her in it. And I am lucky to have known her.

May she rest in eternal peace,

    Shahnaz Kianian-Firouzgar

  2. Dear Shahnaz,

Oh dear, I am sorry you will not receive Maryam’s visit this month. That makes me sadder yet more.

I feel sure she is feeling the love that is flowing.

    All the best,

    Paula

  3. Dear Paula
Like Mehr and Shahnaz I too am still trying to grapple and come to terms with with the sudden and tragic loss of Maryam . She was a dear friend and we spent some wonderful times together in Florence, Newyork, Pakistan, and In two XUNICEF reunions .Last year both Mehr and I were trying to visit both Maryam and Shahnaz together but could not coordinate our schedules. However I did meet Maryam in NewYork when she came to attend the retiree women’s lunch when I told her about it and we spent the rest of the day together !! She was so kind, generous, caring , warm and loving!! What wonderful memories and what a loss. May she rest in eternal peace
With thanks to all for keeping me in the loop
    Warmest regards
    Shahida
