Syria - Amnesty Calls on Security Council

Agnés Callamard, SG of Amnesty International

Amnesty International has called on the Security Council members to vote in favor of a resolution to extend the aid mechanism by only 6 months, despite Russia's veto last week on proposals for 12 and then 9 month extensions.

"The Security Council must not abandon the people of Syria," said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International's Secretary General. "The cross-border aid mechanism is essential to preventing a humanitarian catastrophe."

Callamard said that Russia's veto was "a cynical and callous act" that would "put millions of lives at risk."

"The Security Council must act now to ensure that the aid mechanism is extended," she said. "Anything less would be a betrayal of the people of Syria."

The UN General Assembly is expected to vote on a resolution to extend the aid mechanism on July 11. It is unclear whether the resolution will be successful, as Russia has a veto in the General Assembly as well.

However, Amnesty International is calling on all UN member states to vote in favor of the resolution, regardless of Russia's position.

"The people of Syria cannot afford to wait," said Callamard. "The Security Council and the UN General Assembly must act now to ensure that the aid mechanism is extended."
