Pakistan : How Colonial Rule and US 'aid' Created Led to Devastating Floods : Maira Hayat / Washington Post / Niloufar Pourzand
Anthropologist, Maira Hayat, in this article argues that Pakistan's recent floods are too often put down to "mismanagement, dysfunction, and disorder." Instead, she argues that the history of the country's water infrastructure shows the impact of long colonial rule and post-Independence interference by massive 'development aid' by the US, the World Bank and other players. These factors worsened inequality and poverty in rural areas. The impacts of climate change may only be now beginning to show up in disasters like the recent floods. The responses, she believes, should go beyond the calls for 'climate reparations' and more massive inputs of foreign-led engineering. Instead, a careful look into how water investments will either lessen or worsen the already existing inequalities of the country's rural population.
