Hurricane Ian and XUNICEF in Florida

The XUNICEF Editorial Team was deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of all our XUNICEF families living in Florida. The scenes of the area in the path of Hurricane Ian, one of the deadliest to make landfall there were horrific and alarming.

Our thanks go to Oscar Fernandez who quickly extrapolated a list of Floridian members in our network. Early 29th morning, we emailed XUNICEF friends, enquired into their well-being with the hope that they and their loved ones were spared Ian’s wrath that has left catastrophic damage in its wake. We also requested them to share any news they receive from other XUNICEFers.

Madan Aurora, XUNICEF focal point responded that the 28th night was scary with some areas devastated. However, he had not yet heard any reports from UN retirees. Bilge Ogun who is still in Italy indicated that her home on the East Coast of Florida was saved from the eye of the storm, but she expressed her concern for other UNICEF colleagues. Marty Rajendran indicated that in Miami they were lucky to once again escape a major hurricane. She noted that the west coast and inland through Orlando received the full brunt of winds and rains and hoped that all XUNICEF remained safe. Maria Clara Osorio reported that her area was windy and rainy but otherwise fine. Pooran Pritipal informs that they are safe despite some high winds and lots of rain. He adds, "hurricane Ian has left the state of Florida hopefully never to return." Michael Pozdol from North Carolina writes "Ian is approaching SC near Georgetown, 100 miles south of me. It will make landfall around 2pm today (30 September). We have been getting the winds but rain has been about 2 inches at this time. As it gets closer to the coast, I fully expect winds near 85mph and several more inches of rain. We will be on the wrong side of the eye where the winds are strongest. We have had worse here. In 2017, Matthew reeked havoc on us.

It is possible that due to extensive power outages, we have not heard from more XUNICEFers. We convey our good wishes to all our XUNICEF family in Florida, and the Carolinas and hope they remain safe with minimal damage, if any, to their homes.
