This report states that the backdrop of global crises "risks detracting attention from the broader context that has shaped the lives of children over the last two decades—a period of undeniably historic progress. That context has been defined by two overarching forces. The first is a convergence of living standards, driven by rapid economic growth in developing countries. This marks a reversal of the pattern from the previous several decades when rich countries consistently forged ahead. The second force is an improvement in children’s lives irrespective of gains in income, resulting from the diffusion of new technologies, knowledge and norms…”. It ends with a list of tipping points that are expected to occur over the next five years.
In a period when we seem to be barraged with bad news, it points out some positive changes that are going largely unnoticed - and offer some reasons for hope!

To give credit where credit is due, I found this to be an excellent report prepared by UNICEF's Office of Global Insights and Policy, a UNICEF's Internal think tank, in consultation with UNICEF field offices and interviews with a cross-section of youth around the world.
ReplyDeleteIt contains the best, succinct review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children; the threat of the growing inequality in the world; the weakening of support for multilateralism; the impact of climate change on children; and the need to reshape Internet governance. Very useful analysis with some recommendations for policy makers & practitioners.
