Soliloquy of a Postage Stamp, #62 The International Human Rights Year, 1968 : Fouad Kronfol

I continue this week with another instalment of the philatelic materials issued by countries on the occasion of the 1968 Human Rights Year. In the past week there have been a number of articles that came my way about the demise, or the reduced importance, of the Human Rights precepts as propounded in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights which the UN General Assembly promulgated on 10 December 1948. It is, therefore, even more appropriate to emphasize the fact that so many countries subscribed to the UDHR when it first came out and for many years after continued to issue stamps and covers to comemmorate this important event.

Last week I featured covers and stamps that preceded the Human Rights Year, mainly from the UNPA. This week I will continue to show materials that were issued in the years before 1968, which was the 20th anniversary. Most of this week's material was issued to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UDHR in 1958.

Our first item is from Argentina which issued this stamp for Human Rights Day and the 10th Anniversary of UDHR. It shows the UN Emblem next to the statue of a man bound with ropes. I believe the sculptor is Hector Viola Dib as indicated at the bottom of the stamp.

From Belgium we have this stamp with a design that shows the UN Emblem in front of which two hands are lifting a baby who is stretching its arms towards the inscription of , "Human Rights" . On top is inscribed the dates of 10 December 1948- 10 December 1958.

This is a stamp issued by Brazil for the 10th anniversary of the UDHR. It is a simple design of the UN Emblem from which some rays are pointing to the word "Paz" or Peace.

Here we have a First Day cover of one of two stamps issued by the UNPA as the seventh in the series of issues for UN Human Rights Day. This set was designed by Leonard Mitchell from New Zealand. It shows the world map with four human hands holding it from four sides. The words "Human Rights" are around the globe in the five official languages. One post mark is dated 10 December 1958 while the other has the UN Emblem and the inscription "tenth anniversary". The cachet mainly reproduces the design of the stamp with emphasis on the 10th anniversary of the UDHR. The cover was posted to a Mrs. Kelly in Richmond, Virgfinia.

This is the same 8 cent stamp from the UNPA , but the cachet shows a woman with a shopping bag and a girl on her tricycle. The FDC is addressed to a Mrs. Merrill in Wausen , Ohio.

This is another First Day Cover on regular UN stationary but without a cachet. It has the other 4 cent stamp issued by the UNPA for the 1958 Human Rights Day.

Here we have an interesting stamp issued by the Republic of Chile for Human Rights Day. The air mail stamp depicts symbols of global religions; with the inscription that reads in Spanish, " All Humans have the Right to Free Thought and Religion".

From the Republic of Czeckoslovakia here is a two stamp set issued for Human Rights Day. The first design shows the UN Emblem in one corner and a native young girl being hugged by an allegory of a divinity . The second stamp shows another native woman waving her left arm while holding her child in the other.

The United Arab Republic (Egypt) issued this stamp for Human Rights Day and the tenth anniversary of the UDHR (1948-1958). The design shows the eternal flame to the left next to the portrait of Dr. Mahmood Azmy, a wellknown advocate for Human Rights in the country., and the UN Emblem to the right.

From Ghana we have this stamp issued for Human Rights Day, the 10th of December 1960. Am not sure why they missed the tenth anniversary on 1958. The design shows a stylized UN Emblem, and the colors of the country's flag

This stamp was issued by Indonesia to mark the tenth anniversary of Human Rights Declaration. The desiign has the numeral 10 with the eternal flame and the dates of 10 December 1948-1958. The inscription in Bahasa as well as in French is "Human Rights" .

My final item is this stamp from Pakistan issued to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the UDHR . It shows the world globe and an open book with the inscription, "Human Rights".
