Dear Friends, LIke so many former colleagues I was saddened to hear of Radha's passing. I worked closely with him for quite some time when he took over POC functions in New Delhi and we got on well. I found him to be quite strict yet helpful and flexible when appropriate in the application of policies and practices in that at-times-controversial area of our work - many will remember the many changes and struggles with our systems over the years! May his soul rest in peace. But I'm sure he's up there somewhere diligently screening and checking on new arrivals! :-) I agree with Uma's reminder that simple condolence messages should be sent directly to the family rather than just copied to all members with the reply icon; but I have no problem seeing messages that include substantive remembrances of colleagues - it helps to revive memories especially of those we may not have known well. All the best. Tad

Many members of UPGI and XUNICEF sent messages of sympathy on the death of Mr. Radhakrishnan and circulated these among others in UPGI. We are not able to reproduce these messages here, but we draw the attention of all to the article sent by Mohindra Kumar and the poem "God's Dialogue with Me" which we have posted separately - https://xunicefnewsandviews.blogspot.com/2022/07/gods-dialogue-with-me-v-radhakrishnan.html We also note and support the comment by Uma Shankar, "Condolence messages should be addressed to family members. Ramadass has given the email address. They should not be copied to all members - clutters up Inboxes. -- Uma Shanker"

As we would say in Arabic, « Mashallah » or God Bless. And to think that we missed visiting him at his other residence near Gstaad in Switzerland by a few days.Pity..but we must make up for it soon. Ciao Marco.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rohini. Yes, the editors have considered the idea of a bi-weekly edition several times. We may need to do that sometime soon. In the past when we skipped one or two weeks due to work on the Quarterly, we found ourselves with the opposite problem - too many articles to post. Let's see how the summer goes. Thanks again for your comment.

To meet the challenges of producing weekly news and stories that the editors are experiencing, have you considered moving to a bi-monthly news letter. Maybe less onerous for the group while producing more stories!

Fully agree with Nick/Kul and the gang. As a journalist for many years before joining UNICEF (and working with all four EDs since 2004 in one way or another one comms/media) I was gobsmacked about how much time we spent on internal issues like reorgansation. It was totally out of kilter with UNICEF's real work and if those internal meetings / plans were made public, it would be quite embarrassing. What I would like to know however is there any direct attempt to get the new ED to listen to these wise comments beyond this useful blog? I hope there is and there isn't, can it be proposed and actioned? Warmly SarahCrowe

Not clear whether the seasonal options (spring/summer/autumn) were northern hemisphere ? May be better to give actual months

I just came back from holiday travel. My conclusion ? The world is not yet ready for a reunion travel... Airports are a mess, flights are delayed, bags are lost... I am not convinced all will be well even by next autumn. Furthermore, we should aim to reduce our carbon footprints. Perhaps Europe would be a good location for the next reunion !

First, thanks to Habib and Baquer, Second I cannot understand UNICEF anymore. Cant be that organizations also suffer from memory loss as they get older. I spent 10 years in Guatemala as representative for Central America and I read to look for horror part of the civil war in three of the seven countries we served. I cant see anything. I looked for " the first time in the history of humanity where a war stopped because of children" and I do not see it again. Please wonderful UNICEF of today, do not hire me as a consultant, do not pay travel or perdiem, do not even give a 1 dollar a year contract, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF CHILDREN IN WAR, please ask me. If you do like my voice, ask all the staff who worked in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, what they think UNICEF could do to avoid the slaughter ( yes the work is slaughter) and maiming of children and their mothers. We did see and LIVE in such conditions and we worked for UNICEF, The same UNICEF.

There is a 'Next' button at the bottom left of each page of the questionnaire. If that does not appear, we also included a direct link to the full questionnaire - https://forms.gle/Ld9vL3VHY1WxG4bAA. The direct link has no pages and allows you to fill everything. Let us know if you face further problems.

XUNICEF News and Views carried an article that Exdir Russel celebrated 25 years for Children in Armed Conflict. It is good to recall that Baquer Namazi wrote the UNICEF Executive Board paper on Children in Armed Conflict for the 1983 Board. At that time I think it was called Children in Especially Difficult Situations. It was at that Board that MENA Regional Director Sarojini Vittachi showed the Board what rubber bullets looked like. Baquer’s paper was frank, bordering on the political more than UNICEF usually wants, but Jim Grant let it through. I remember that I told Baquer this was risky stuff. He answered by pointing his finger up and saying “I believe in God”. I thought: A man of principle and a man of faith. Habib.
