Isn't it interesting that Bangladesh has managed to influence the countries in the region in terms of low-cost water AND sanitation ? Prof Md Yunus of the Grameen Bank was promoting handpumps for women for income generation in around 1983/84 at a time when men thought they had the monopoly, so that training women as masons was a natural progression to break the male mould. Expecting women to be involved with such an activity in Herat is not too far removed from a project I saw in Kabul in 2001 where the making and selling of bread was an all female affair. And, wow, could those women bake a tasty slab of nan ? The only question I would ask is as to whether the Taliban will allow this to continue ?

An amazing story that immediately took me to a time when Ukraine was full of rich cultural sites, culinary delights, and wondrous adventures to discover. May peace bring the opportunity to visit and the happy smiles on the faces of every Ukrainian. Thanks, Maie.

Thanks for your timely & excellent initiative, Georgios & FOGGS. The final letter came out really well - positive, constructive & encouraging. Very impressive list of signatories representing a broad cross-section of former UN system staff, including quite a few highly regarded senior officials. Hope the SG and his team will feel encouraged to be bolder and more proactive. In his 2nd term, the SG has nothing to lose or fear, and much to gain in terms of his legacy by being more courageous in defence of the UN principles & ideals that we all cherish so deeply. Thanks, Margherita, for sharing this excellent historical overview of how the idealistic vision of the UN that we all cherish has been stymied by the realpolitik of the veto system enshrined in the Charter. As our ex-colleague, Anwarul Chowdhury said in a recent article, “The chief culprit in the failure of unified global action by the UN is the continuation of the irrational practice of veto". I happen to agree with Anwarul's remark that, "if only one reform action could be taken, it should be the abolition of veto. Believe me, the veto power influences not only the decisions of the Security Council but also all work of the UN, including importantly the choice of the Secretary-General. I believe the abolition of veto requires a greater priority attention in the reforms process than the enlargement of the Security Council membership with additional permanent ones. Such permanency is simply undemocratic. I believe that the veto power is not “the cornerstone of the United Nations” but in reality, its tombstone.”. Yet abolishing the veto power is practically impossible under the current UN Charter. Hence as President Zelensky said at the UN SC, we need a Global Conference - a 2nd San Francisco UN Conference - and massive global mobilization of civil society to revamp the UN Charter's chapter V, (and specifically article 27) that makes the veto power immutable.

“The untold story of UNICEF”, told by Kul Gautam, is one of the best short film about what UNICEF did and continue to do to save the lives of children and improve the quality of lives of children in a nutshell, or what Jim Grant referred to it “Survival and Development or Child Survival Revolution”. This beautiful story has to be told by every media outlet all over the world in languages of the countries. Thank you Kul for narrating the story so beautifully. I very much related to your own story in Kathmandu and as a child waiting in line for vaccination or for that glass of milk in Kabul. Congratulations and best wishes!
