How old do you feel?
I am close to 67, but feel like very early sixties (that is, still designing what to do in the next phase of my life).
Where do you live?
Montreal in Quebec province of Canada.
What book do you currently read?
Unveiled - How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam by Yasmine Mohammed (the complacency towards the veiling of girls has preoccupied me profoundly during my work with UNICEF and the subject is shaping my future occupational plans).
If you could travel without restrictions, where would you go?
Heissa Island on the Nile in the South of Egypt - a harbour of peace and a source of energy and well-being (we should be able by now to travel without constraints, right?).
Your best experience with UNICEF?
Working with a passionate and bright education team in MENA and realizing meaningful projects together.
Your biggest challenge when working for UNICEF?
Management - and the challenge of balancing playing by the rules and thinking out of the box, politics and human rights.
What is your biggest fear, in relation to the future of children?
Poverty and war, and more specifically depriving children of the opportunity to learn freely and to think critically and responsibly.
What is your greatest hope, in relation to children?
The hope comes from the children themselves and their urge for love, happiness, security, justice, trust, and creativeness.
What is your one piece of advice you wish to give to the UNICEF Executive Director?
There are many jewels working in UNICEF, hidden for the most part while dedicated to their work: keep them in sight and value their contribution.
