My week-end amusement ::::::::::
Now that we have welcomed the eighth ED on board I will share with you a series of "factoids" about them, some of which you may not know or may not have thought about..
I call the article: The ED8...(with a wink to the G8, and the film OCEAN'S Eleven)...
________________________________________________________
MAURICE PATE 1947-1965
HENRY LABOUISSE 1965-1979
JAMES GRANT 1980-1995
CAROL BELLAMY 1995-2005
ANN VENEMAN 2005-2010
ANTHONY LAKE 2010-2018
HENRIETTE FORE 2018-2022
CATHERINE RUSSELL 2022--???
* The total years of tenure has reached 75 last year..
* Pate had the longest tenure, 18 years, followed by Grant 15 years and Labouisse 14 years.
* Fore had the shortest tenure..4 years. and Veneman 5 years..
* Did you know UNICEF also had two Acting Executive Directors...Dick Heyward after Pate, and Richard Jolly after Grant. ?
* While ExDir for just a few months Heyward was DDE for over 30 years....
* Jolly is the only head of UNICEF to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II...
* UNICEF reached gender parity with four males and four females this year...
* But the four males have served 55 years compared with only 20 for the women
* ED Russell will have to serve 4 terms to bring the ladies to the same tenures.
* Both Pate and Grant passed away while in their post.
* Pate, Labouisse and Grant all passed away in a year ending with 5.. 1965, 1975 and 1995......
* While all have been US citizens, Maurice, Labouisse, Bellamy and Henriette are Gallic sounding...is there a French connection somewhere?
* Grant was actually born as a Canadian......
* On names, Veneman's real one is Ann Margaret, like one of my favourite Hollywood movie stars...
* Two EDs have uncommon middle names; James PINEO Grant & William Anthony KIRSOPP Lake.
* Pate, Grant, Lake and Fore have surnames that are common English words..
* ED Russell has the longest name with 16 characters, followed by Labouisse with 14 and Fore with 13..
* Grant and Veneman have the shortest names with 10 characters each..
* All were called "Executive Director" until Fore introduced the short ED ! .
* All except Bellamy have been married..
* Labouisse and Grant were both twice married..
* All were born in the US except Grant who was born in Beijing, China..
* While most have held high posts in US government, only Veneman held a Cabinet post, as head of USDA.....
* Only Labouisse has served as head of two UN Agencies,,UNRWA and UNICEF..
* Labouisse received the Nobel Peace Prize for UNICEF, ('tho it was awarded mainly on accomplishments under Pate)..
* Bellamy was both Peace Corps Volunteer and Head of the Agency, before UNICEF..
* Pate is the only ED to have a UNICEF Award in his name... so far !
* Pate, Labouisse and Grant have parts of UNICEF House named after them...what is in store for the others ???
* UNICEF reached its first $100 Million under Labouisse and its first $ 1 Billion under Grant... will Russell make it to $10 Billion.??
* On its 5th anniversary UNICEF had under 500 staff members globally; on its 75th it had 22,000, and counting !!!!

Does anyone have more to add ???

Thank you Malika Abrous for the comments...and especially to inform that the second floor Émergency Room in UNICEF HOUSE is named after Carol Bellamy.
ReplyDeleteMerci Fritz Lherisson. for correcting the year Henry Labouisse died being 1985 and not 1975. It was a typo.
ReplyDeleteYour additions are also welcome:
The only ED to résign Before end of term was H.Fore.
The only UN Agency which had ED of only one nationality for 75 years is UNIÇEF.
