Yesterday, I reached out to Banu, wife of Jude Henriques, the colleague we lost recently.

She was happy that I called and was willing to talk. I thought I would share with you a bit of our conversation.

For those who did not know Jude well, their marriage was an East-West dialogue. Jude a Mumbaikar (an East Indian Christian) married a Bengali. A marriage of two metros.

Banu and Jude were class mates in Nirmala Niketan and did their Masters in Social Work together. They were also neighbours in Chembur and daily travelled in the same bus.

After retirement Jude chose to settle down in Kolkatta, rather than in Mumbai. Kolkatta was cheaper and more informal. Jude was the eldest of his siblings. They all kept in touch with him and sought his guidance in all important matters. Banu is the only child of her parents.

They have a daughter, Ipshita. She is a medical doctor married to an army officer. The young couple have two children.

Jude had cancer of the kidney for the last four years. After a surgical intervention the cancer spread all over the body. He suffered a lot. He became “skin and bones”

Ipshita wants her mother to join her in Karwar in Goa. But Banu cannot do it yet, because her 90 year old mother does not want to leave Kolkatta. Banu will continue to live in Kolkatta.

Banu remembered Jude’s
  • dedication to his work,
  • his simple life style,
  • his hard work and
  • the fact that people who worked with him on the teacher empowerment initiatives kept in touch with him
Rest in Peace my friend Jude. More power to you Banu.

  1. Dear Ramdas,
The news of Jude's demise came as a painful blow. He was not only a colleague but also a dear family friend. It was only the other day he informed me about his illness. Didn't expect the end would come so soon. My professional engagement with Jude dates back to 1992 when I was posted in Lucknow Field Office. Actually, he inspired me to launch an education initiative in UP which was very similar to his Teacher Empowerment Programme in MP. I have many fond memories of working closely with him in India, especially when he was sent to Lucknow to support me.
He will always be remembered as a good human being and a dear friend.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Banu and Ispshita. May his soul rest in peace in eternal heaven.
    Kamaluddin.
