So I'm crossing Broadway at 98th Street on my way home today and I see this guy on a bench wearing a colorful UNICEF football jersey. As I pass, I compliment him on the shirt and say, "I worked for UNICEF" and he responded: "Me too!"
Turns out David Wood worked in GCO and the US Committee during the JPG era. We didn't know each other back in the day, but I'm so glad I overcame my shyness and greeted him!
David is a wonderful man who, fate would have it, has lived across the street from me for years... we never met, sadly, and now he will be moving to Seattle in a couple of weeks. We're going to have coffee one of these days and swap war stories.
He said he only recently heard about the retirees group and was about to subscribe to the XUNICEF newsletter.
We chatted a bit about his health issues and travel plans, and he expressed condolences for my wife Rachel's death.
Proof that we live in a small world and that UNICEF connections stand the test of time.
All the best,
Robert
Editor's Note: David Wood recently joined XUNICEF - Welcome David !!
I worked with David Wood in very late 1980s and early 1990s to start up Change for Good with Qantas in Australia (and with BA and Cathay Pacific) when I was with the Australian Natcom before heading off to Somalia in early 1992. David was the HQ champion for Change for Good - when many others were not interested at all. Great to 'see' you David after so long.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear about David Wood . I had worked with him in a way benefiting from his soccer knowledge. Unfortunately with retirement we lost touch, but maybe through our network we can reestablish contact. /
