Audrey's Statue In front of UNICEF House : Oscar Fernandez

As I was standing there in front of Audrey’s statute in UNICEF House, reminiscing of wonderful bygone days, I couldn’t resist taking a picture and sharing it with our group.

Words are indeed necessary!  Here is what the plaque says.

“The Spirit of Audrey”
by John Kennedy

Dedicated to the memory of Audrey Hepburn
UNICEF Ambassador 1986 to 1993
Donated by Robert Wolders

I’m also including a link with a short write up about unveiling ceremony of the statue in James P. Grant Plaza.

I want to thank everyone for sharing your especial memories of Audrey Hepburn. I call her our very special UNICEF lady who looks out for disadvantaged children everywhere from her UNICEF shrine in James Grant Plaza.

But from all your stories, one interesting one stood out and I wanted to share it.
Cheers,
Oscar

From John Tsacrios;

Thank you Oscar!
We were graced by Audrey Hepburn’s visit to Houston for 4 days in March 1990 raising awareness and funds for UNICEF programs.

Audrey read from the Diary of Anne Frank while Michael Tilson Thomas conducted the New World Symphony in Houston’s renowned Wortham Center.

After the performance at the Wortham Center we had a Gala event at the Warwick Hotel. The Gala was chaired by the late Baroness Sandra and Baron Enrico Di Portanova.

Audrey was so generous with her time and energy. She taped UNICEF public service announcements in both English and Spanish for our electronic media networks.

Years later we produced a UNICEF Gala event in 2006 Remembering Audrey Hepburn. Jane Seymour came in for the event along with officials from the Audrey Hepburn Foundation. We raised a net of $500,000 in one evening for UNICEF programs.

I would like to only add a credit to my dear friends Nancy Ames and Danny Ward of Ward & Ames Special Events for their leadership support of our 1990 Audrey Hepburn Event.

The following year on Valentine’s night in 1991 we flew Julio Iglesias into Houston to perform for our UNICEF Gala benefiting the children in war-torn Iraq.

One year after that we created a spectacular event in 1992 starring Placido Domingo and Linda Ronstadt. They performed in the Summit Arena to a crowd of 20,000.

Again, the Baron and Baroness Enrico Di Portanova hosted a red carpet Gala Event at Neiman Marcus Couture for 500 VIP Guests including the First Lady of Mexico.

We raised over $500,000 net revenue for UNICEF with the Placido Domingo event.

Many memories --- Audrey Hepburn launched our major fundraising efforts that continued into 2008 with Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Roger Moore, Nana Mouskouri, Lang Lang, and many other UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors.

We will forever remember Audrey’s beautiful and gracious spirit!
