International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: UNICEF Volunteers Lörrach /Ute Deseniss-Gros

A project of the volunteers for UNICEF in  Lörrach, Gemany. For the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March), the group has put together a remarkable Foto Exhibition About Children of the World, of children living in the town of Lörrach. The Foto Exhibition portrays 55 children from 25 nations. Eight photographers took part.

The group wants to increase awareness of the need for children to live in peaceful places, to develop well and to enjoy the rights all children deserve. In Germany the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is accompanied by many activities aimed at raising awareness all over the country.

Whitney, 13 years, Nigeria. I like that there are so many nice people here. I have everything that I need to be happy, and I wish that others could be happy as me.

Lioba, 8 years, Korea/Germany. I play the violin and I like to stand on my head and look at the world upside down

Theo, 8 years, French/German. I like that there is a castle in my town

Nora 11 years. We like to play all together and jump on the trampoline. I most like to walk our chicken and dogs

Mahmoud, 5 years and Enas, 8 years, Syria. We love the playground in the park

Elena, 17 years, USA/Germany. I like sports and play the drums. I like the weekly farmers' market with regional products and that everything can be accessed on foot.

Anisa, 15 years, Croatia. Croatia is my homeland. I am comfortable where my family is. When I am grown up, I will engage against racism and help others. My teachers help me, because they help me learning

Lara, 14 years, Libanon. Both countries are closee to my heart. In Lörrach, I like the city library. I wish there was no racism and mobbing

Camila 17 years, Mariana, 17 years, Argentina. We want to engage for women's rights

Mohammad Waris, 21 years, Afghanistan. Lörrach is my home, because I have integrated myself and came to know very caring people. Later on, I want to become the Mayor of Weil.

Ahmed, 14 years, Syria. I love to play soccer. I play for the Tumringen club. It is my dream to play for Basel, then Barcelona and later for Madrid

Dalal, 8 years. I am born in Syria and my mum cooks Syrian dishes for us. I want to become a dentist. I love my life. Sidra, 7 years, Syria. There is picture showing me with my mum and my little ister in Syria. In Syria I have a dog called Rokie, and sometimes I miss him. Hannah, 7 years, Germany. The best is my school. I want to become a veterinarian. I have two cats.

Lea, Amely, Maleen and Rosalie, Germany/Italy. I need my mum to be happy. I like dancing. I speak Italian and German. I like the world as it is.

Anna, 8 years, Serbia/Italy. I play the guitar and practice karate. I would love to remain young. I love nature and think we should protect it. Emily, 7 years, Germany. My future will be nice because I will be a riding instructor

Nathan, 7 years, Brasil,Peru, Germany. I feel home in Lörrach. There should be many more trees, because they catch the CO2. I will invent electric cars and I wish for a machine that dispenses sweets. I want to be an inventor. I love music and chemistry. My grandfather is my idol.

William, 3 months, Brazil/Cameroon and Stella, 24 years, Brazil. For my baby, I am the strong one. I tell him: 'no fear - we'll manage'. That gives me courage, too.

Linh Chi, 16 years, Vietnam. Lörrach is my home, I connect good and bad memories with it. All these events formed me to what I am today. Home is linked with the great people that I happened to meet here. I think people can also be your home.

Helena, 17 years, France/Gemany. Helena leads the UNICEF Junior Team in Lörrach, which is active in the Fridays for Future Movement. She engages for more justice, equality and the realization of children's rights, together with UNICEF. Quoting Anne Frank, she says: How wonderful that nobody needs to wait a single momement before starting to change the world.


Lisa, 4 years and Arianna, 2 years, Russia. I speak German and Russian and I love horses. All people should have a horse. I want a pink horse with glitter. Arianna is a caring mum to her dolls.

Oceane, 17 years, France/Germany. Leads the UNICEF Junior Team and organizes the Fridays for Future Movement in Lörrach. Her statement: It is the contradictions that make us productive in our fight for a sustainable world

  1. Ute, congratulations! yes, educating children about equality is the best way to eliminate racial discrimination, especially if the children shown in the exhibition live in their neighbourhoods..
