Our Photographer of the Week - Detlef Palm

Detlef Palm currently enjoys negotiating on his mountain bike the rocky and slippery trails of the Eifel and the Ardennes. He and his wife always liked to travel. When on missions to distant countries, they used to take a few days’ leave to explore different and unusual places, outside the conference rooms and without the protocol. Photography helped to bring the memories home and to share them with others. A good quality pocket camera – and thousands of discarded photographs - is all what it takes.

Detlef has spent more than 32 years in humanitarian action and development, 30 of which in UNICEF, and 20 years in Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Malawi and Namibia. Detlef was the focal point for the Program Policy and Procedure, and wrote on the human rights based approach, results based management, risk management, UN reform, and UNICEF’s engagement in high income countries. He then became the Deputy Director of Internal Audit, to check whether staff were actually reading any guidance. He retired in 2015 as Representative in Albania.

Detlef eagerly follows UNICEF’s moves to adapt to the changing world, and can’t stop sharing his views.

  2. Obviously a man of many talents Detlef does not stop impressing his team mates with new features constantly. His forte is looking outside the "bubble" which gives us so many different approaches and alternate views of subjects that interest us all. Great to have you as a collaborator in the XUNICEF News and Views endeavour.
