Each week we present the works of one of the XUNICEF artists or photographers whose works appear in our galleries.
This week we feature the works of Maggie Murray-Lee.
Margaret
(Maggie) Murray-Lee, influenced by her mother, was fortunate to be exposed to
drawing and painting in early childhood.
While living in Paris in the sixties and seventies, she
became very interested in photography. During her posting for the
Kampuchean Emergency, she was able to do some photography for UNICEF.
Consequently, photography became part of her job description in her next
posting in West and Central Africa where she photographed women and children in
some 20 countries. Maggie’s
photographs were published by UNICEF and the UN, the National Committees and
the London Office of Associated Press and was the subject of many exhibitions.
She soon gained recognition as a professional photographer.
Upon her return to New Zealand, she took up water colour painting and used her photography as a source for her paintings. She moved to the Bay of Islands from Auckland to study under an excellent teacher from England. Her preferred subject is New Zealand’s magnificent coastline which she loves. She was able to sell her work through a gallery in Russell but unfortunately it and others have closed down and the teacher has moved away. Maggie also paints in acrylics and oils but has recently slowed down for health reasons.
Note that if you stop the slideshow, it will not start again on its own. You may need to reload the page.
