Our Artist of the Week - Gautam Banerji

Gautam joined UNICEF in 1985 as APO for the ICDS Programme in Patna, India where both his daughters were born. To that extent they were both his “UNICEF Girl Child” babies. Of course they are highly empowered young women now. Gautam now enjoys being a grandparent to his grandchildren all still under the age of two. He affectionately calls them UNICEF Babies Mark II. You will get a glimpse of these treasured moments when you see his pencil art collection.

From Patna, Gautam was posted to Calcutta (now Kolkata), and then to UNICEF Baghdad in 1991, as the focal point for the Iraq Emergency. He left Baghdad on sabbatical in1995 and due to unexpected family emergencies; he regrettably never made it back to UNICEF!

Gautam embarked on a different path when he started his legal practice in London, where he continued till 2014. He had the privilege to serve again in Baghdad for a year between 2009-2010 as Judicial Advisor to the newly set up Judicial Development Institute under a US State Department Task Order. He visited Kabul in 2017-2018 on a USAID assignment as a Short Term Training Advisor to the Supreme Court.

Since 2014, Gautam has been trailing along with Madhu, his wife, on the International School circuit. He is presently at the United World College, Dilijan, Armenia, as the Coordinator for Sustainable Development and also teaches Global Politics and Theory of Knowledge to the IB Diploma class. Several XUNICEFers were fortunate to visit Armenia/Georgia thanks to Gautam volunteering his time and effort to organize this memorable XUNICEF reunion.

Prior to Armenia, Madhu and Gautam lived and worked in Uganda and Gabon.

His passion to move and learn and serve has survived from his UNICEF days! In addition to his colour pencil work, Gautam does water colour painting and is an avid photographer. Please click this link to see Gautam’s collection of art and photography.

About the Dr. Seuss entries, Gautam says, "Dr Seuss had inspired my generation through childhood. My daughters had read some of my books and I had bought them many more. It’s time for me to fill in Dr Seuss colouring book and inspire my grandchildren with a splash of colours."

To watch the slideshow of the pencil drawings, the water colour, and his Dr. Seuss colouring book for his grandchildren  click on the first image in the slideshow below. Be patient - each slide takes about 10 seconds to load, but the first slide often takes a little longer to load.

Note that if you stop the slideshow, it will not start again on its own. You may need to reload the page.
