Call for XUNICEF to Find Ways to Ensure COVID Vaccination for Its Members Will CIGNA cover Vaccination? : Farid Rahman
Dear Tom and Friends,
Now that that the availability of a viable Covid Vaccine is a reality and as they say charity begins at home, I was wondering whether our group can set up a mechanism for arranging the Covid -19 vaccination of all desirous members of XUNICEF and their families on an accelerated basis.
This will, involve leadership ( and I look to you Tom for providing it ) and a small and dedicated action group in NY. The group will need to work out demand and requirements based on consultation with country focal persons, arranging procurement and logistics through COVAX or UNICEF, costing and pricing, and finally, the modalities of carrying out the vaccinations at the country level.
Ideally, UNICEF as an organization should be encouraged to undertake this activity for staff members and their families in all their country offices and we retirees could also use these services as add-ons.
Some members may not be interested in this proposal because of the robust health systems in their countries and governments taking responsibility for COVID vaccination, but for most developing countries it would be an enormous help. Here in Islamabad the retirees do this routinely in collaboration with the UNICEF Islamabad Office for the flu vaccination.
We the members of XUNICEF are a great group of experienced programmers with lifelong expertise in immunisation. Hope we can change gears for moment from our concerns for changing the global order of things and do something practical to help ourselves.
Best regards and stay safe until you get your shot.

ReplyDeleteThe circular below comes from a UN Colleague.
Many active staff and retirees were hoping to avail vaccination through UN. Similar sentiment was raised by Mr. Farid Rahman in latest xUnicef weekly update.
In view of this circular, our hopes may be somewhat misplaced for immediate future, unless situation changes soon enough!!
FYI. Regards,
Shafique.

We were talking about this yesterday – UN circular came today. It means I doubt we will get a vaccine soon but may be later part of 2021 – I hope.
Quote In order to utilize limited UN resources efficiently (i.e. in particular, in UN Headquarter locations and/or other locations where local health authorities are providing access to vaccines), UNMD recommends that personnel should make maximum use of the local health care system to gain access to the pandemic vaccine. This is particularly relevant during the early stages of the vaccination campaign when supplies will be limited. UN stockpiles of vaccine should be primarily intended for personnel in field locations in areas with community transmission, where there are sub-optimal local healthcare services, and limited or no vaccine availability.
- Dependents should only be vaccinated by UN Medical Services or FLOD health structures in locations where this is routinely done and no other access to vaccine exists. Unquote
