Results of UNICEF’s 2020 Global Staff Survey (GSS)

Good morning!

Sharing to you the Global Staff Survey report.  Maybe you want some weekend reading 😊

I'm receiving news of the UNICEF Beirut staff who have been affected – immediately one of the drivers lost his wife (she was the love of his life), and yesterday one of the staff laid her beloved 15 yr-old son to rest.  The losses are beyond heart-wrenching.

Here in Borno, we had over 100 people return home this week to Kukawa, after 2 years in an IDP camp …only to be abducted by awaiting non-government forces.

My heart doesn't know which way to turn, and I'm sure many of you are similarly impacted by events around the globe.

Hug your loved ones (virtually, as needed) and do stay safe.
All the best,
Carina

Dear Colleagues,

As an organization, UNICEF has made great strides in recent years to build a truly inclusive workplace – one in which every staff member feels welcome and valued as we carry out our shared mission for children and young people around the world.

Continuing this journey together means periodically taking the pulse of our personnel.

On June 15, we launched UNICEF's 2020 Global Staff Survey (GSS) to measure our progress in promoting an inclusive workplace environment.

Following an extensive consultation process with personnel, this year's survey included new and revised questions. This includes questions related to COVID-19 and racism.

For the first time, the survey was open to all of UNICEF's people – our staff, consultants, volunteers and interns – and conducted online in Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

The results are very encouraging. A total of 13,571 personnel completed the survey, including 12,295 staff members -- out of a total of 15,658 -- 767 consultants, 432 UN Volunteers and 77 interns.

The high participation rate is a clear demonstration of the importance all of you place on shaping a better, stronger UNICEF, and doing so as a global team. Thank you for making your voices heard!

The initial results of the attached Global Whole Organization Report show an organization with strong commitment and morale, positively focused on building inclusive, respectful and healthy work environments:

  • The overall positive response rates were highly reassuring in 8 of the 12 topics, most notably in the areas of UNICEF's Response to COVID-19 (88%); Staff Security (84%), and Knowledge and Information Sharing (81%).

  • The results in the topics of Work/Life Balance (71%) and Personal Empowerment (70%) were very encouraging as these areas improved by 8% and 15%, respectively compared to the 2017 GSS results.

  • Our overall employee engagement index of 77% was 11 points higher compared to 2017.

  • But we have continuing work to do. We all need to focus our efforts on strengthening Diversity (65%); Career and Professional Development (63%) and Office Efficiency and Effectiveness (61%).

In the coming weeks, offices with at least 10 respondents will be receiving their individual office overall results. In addition, the global and individual office reports containing disaggregated data for further analysis will also be made available.

As Executive Director, I am asking all of UNICEF's heads of offices to immediately follow-up on these results, and work with staff and staff associations to address the issues identified. I ask that we all particularly focus on the workstreams of Diversity, Career Development and Office Efficiency.

Across the UNICEF family, let us take the next steps in our journey together, and build the inclusive workplace that our personnel deserve. Our mission for children demands no less.

Thank you again for your participation in the Global Staff Survey.
