Upon joining UNICEF in 1976, one of the first things I heard was that UNDP had accepted the recommendations (Jackson et al) that it should accept whatever priorities any particular country's planning commission dictated. I feel that any UN agency should be entitled to have its own reason for existence and its policies. How can UNICEF aid children on both sides of civil strife/war, if it's only following the priorities of the government of the day. Way back in time I noticed there were staff in UNICEF that seemed to feel that it should become more like UNDP in adhering more closely to government and local political favorite themes. I felt that would be (or was) a mistake.
I was always under the impression that UNICEF would assist national governments’ priorities where they aligned themselves with UNICEF priorities, such as the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. If they didn’t agree, UNICEF had every right to decline their support. Don’t tell me that some UNICEF Country Offices simply passed the money on for dubious political projects, unchallenged ?
Thanks Bernt, 👍👍👍
Thanks, Detlef! The UN and UNICEF, at country level, as a sidecar with money for projects driven by governments, is making our organization irrelevant. UNICEF should support projects and policies in accordance with the observations and recommendations of the UN Committee on the rights of the child, regardless of governments priorities. In all countries there are organizations believing in the principles and values of the CDC and they should be our counterparts, not those who govern -not for children- but to win next elections.
BRAVO!!! Very grateful that UNICEF found its voice for children again... it was a deafening silence during the last administration.
Enjoyed the article full of humour as always- Ken, your writings about real life UNICEF not only makes good reading but also tell us about your acceptance of inevitable circumstances and adaptability to get on with your work. You make it sound easy but one can imagine the problematic situations for which you seem to have always found solutions- please keep sharing your interesting and informative stories. Thanks . Sree
Jon continues to be a great public health practitioner who could have spent his life as a very rich medical practitioner in USA but chose to spend his life saving lives. A great person to know and be inspired.
So wonderful to see you and to learn about all your enthusiasms, Doreen. You have not changed one iota! Your volunteer work is an inspiration.
Unbelievable how you do these portraits in such fine detail and capturing life-like expressions.
Mahendra, enjoyed listening to your Quick Chat with Tom ... I found your views sensible and do-able, especially those comments you made at the end regarding UNICEF's response to emergencies. I also heard you say that you will be in India in December, look forward to meeting you and your family in Bangalore. Sree
SO true! our ten year grandson gives mu husband and I demonstration lessons on how to use the icons on the IPhone and knows more about its uses than his grandparents.
Thank you all for the kind comments above. It’s always lovely to hear from colleagues -especially those who encouraged me to draw cartoons at UNICEF meetings. U vs R War will end only when Americans realize and understand that weapons make billionaires in America, but no-food on the plate will kill millions in the whole world, incl America. It is just a super failed democracy, making every country suffer . What kind of human right is this?
Wow, Amazing! such realistic painting! They look like photos. Thanks for sharing. .
Lovely report, Sam. Knowing both of you, I can't imagine you, Myung, not playing anymore. And you two certainly will continue to travel (maybe even to St.Croix?) Best wishes and keep writing.
Excellent additions indeed! Thank you for sharing :-)
Nice Story, Ken. Many of our programmes(and stuff in our personal lives) are based on learning from children. Thanks for sharing!

  1. I haven’t seen or read any statement from UNICEF on the barbaric killing of 19 elementary school kids and 2 teachers in their classrooms by a weapon of war purchased by an 18 year old kid for his own birthday in San Antonio, Texas. If an 18 year old can’t purchase cigarettes or go to the bar and drink alcohol or purchase alcohol from a store, how on earth can an 18 year old purchase an AR15 and hundreds of bullets. Those murdered kids and their teachers are and should be concern of UNICEF. If a statement has already been made by UNICEF, can someone please correct me, thanks. We live in a mad and unstable world, sadly!
