We're Back !! - And Yes, It's Dèjá Vu, All Over Again : Tom McDermott

Yes, We're Back - And It’s Déjà Vu, All Over Again We editors took a pause in August, and now, as we return, it feels as though the world itself had dozed off for the month. For millions of children and families, daily life remained as precarious as ever—perhaps even more so. The wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan dragged on without relief; peace plans were floated, negotiated, and collapsed—again and again.

Nukes Again in Belarus : Shared by Kul Gautam

This is ominous. Under the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, three countries – Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances. But Belarus, with Russia's help has quietly given up on the Budapest Memorandum and re-armed with tactical nuclear weapons – an apparent quid pro quo for allowing Russia to use Belarus territory in its February 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine. Feed them words - Shared by Tarique Farooqui

An oped on a subject which is current….. Fouad Feed them words F.S. Aijazuddin — Dawn Click here for the article Summary F.S. Aijazuddin examines how famine, once understood as a natural or divine calamity, has increasingly become a deliberate human-made weapon, with Gaza as a current example. He traces historical contexts of famine, from biblical accounts to the Bengal famine under British rule, highlighting how political decisions and indifference often determined life or death. He notes parallels with Pakistan’s own dependence on U.S. food aid under the PL-480 programme, which was later withdrawn due to political disagreements rather than agricultural self-sufficiency. The article critiques Israel’s policy toward Gaza, framing famine as a calculated tool of genocide rather than mismanagement. Aijazuddin argues that Palestinians are being deliberately deprived of food and dignity, with starvation becoming a weapon of war. He stresses that international aid, while necessary, re...

Gaza Uninhabitable: Challenging Colonial Frames of Erasure - Shared by Maie Ayoub

Worth your reading time. Maie Gaza Uninhabitable: Challenging Colonial Frames of Erasure Abdalrahman Kittana : Al Shabaka Click here for the article Summary This commentary critiques the framing of Gaza as “uninhabitable,” arguing that the term functions as a colonial discourse that obscures responsibility for destruction and erases Palestinian presence and agency. It traces the historical roots of such narratives back to the concept of terra nullius, used by European imperial powers and later adopted within Zionist ideology to justify displacement. By recasting land as empty or lifeless, colonial powers legitimized conquest while denying the existence of thriving Indigenous communities. The article highlights how the idea of “uninhabitability” resurfaced through UN reports in the 2010s, which, though based on real infrastructure collapse, risked depoliticizing the crisis by framing it as inevitable rather than as the outcome of Israeli blockade, occupation, and repeated military assa...

A New Approach to Refugee Inclusion : Shared by Niloufar Pourzand

Why we need a new playbook for refugee inclusion  Bahana Mirindi Hydrogene — The New Humanitarian Click here for the article Summary Bahana Mirindi Hydrogene argues that refugee participation in humanitarian decision-making remains largely symbolic, with real power concentrated in agencies and donors. The article highlights the case of Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where food rations have been cut to 40% and aid withdrawn for those labeled “self-reliant” under a new World Food Programme framework. Protests have erupted, but refugees were only “consulted” after policies were already designed, illustrating a system that validates decisions rather than co-creates them.

Jeffrey Sachs on A New Foreign Policy for Europe : Kul Gautam

A fascinating analysis and recommendation by Jeff Sachs. I do not agree with his assertion that Soviet/Russian policy was (and is) solely or largely determined by its genuine "security concerns". He completely ignores or under-emphasizes the genuine democratic aspirations of the people of the Baltic countries, Ukraine, Poland, etc. and their desire to align more closely with the EU. But much of his historical analysis of how US/UK & their European allies broke their pledge to Gorbachev not to expand NATO to its frontier states is correct, and some of his assertions about Ukraine are partially correct.

Heard on the grapevine- Unicef, Albania

"Indeed, the changes both within the organization and globally are deeply concerning. We had to reduce from 32 to 18 posts in Tirana- a very difficult process. Unfortunately, the shifts continue, and there are still no clear positive signals ahead. Challenging times, pushing us to be more creative and to explore new partnerships. I believe we'll pull through, but it's hard to see the pain our colleagues and partners experience who had not much changes in their careers over the past decade... "

The Corruption of Electoral Representation: A Tale of Two Democracies : Mohamed Safieldin

In many developing countries, local elections are often marred by vote-buying practices, where candidates pay individuals directly in exchange for their votes. This transactional approach undermines the very foundation of democratic accountability. Once elected, such candidates no longer feel any obligation to represent the needs or aspirations of their constituents.

The UN at 80 - Rediscovering the Courage to Lead : Shared by Richard JJ Bridle

Just in case you haven't seen this. Richard Bricle https://www.brownhatstories.com I’ve seen the UN at its best. As it turns 80, with a world in crisis, it must recover its courage By Martin Griffiths — The Guardian Click here for the article Summary Martin Griffiths, former UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs, warns that the United Nations, as it marks its 80th anniversary, is losing its central role in global peacemaking. While it continues to provide vital humanitarian support, he argues that the organisation has become increasingly marginalised in resolving conflicts, trapped by caution and political deadlock. This shift, he says, has left the UN addressing only the symptoms of crises in places like Ukraine, Palestine, and Sudan, rather than tackling their root causes.

The War in Gaza: Hunger, Politics, and Contested Narratives By Isaac Chotiner / The New Yorker 30 July “A seven-month-old baby lies in our paediatric intensive care unit, so tiny and malnourished that I initially mistook her for a newborn.
