Renewal of Life : Luis Oliveros

Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the USA … The news is so terrible and depressing. My mind needs a break from all the horror and disgust. In times like these, I go out and take photographs. Spring has arrived, and we've had a few sunny, colorful days. Sun or clouds, color or not—Spring is here. And it’s not just about the light, but about the renewal of life. Unfortunately, not everyone is speaking of life or its renewal. Sometimes, we have to strive to see the light—yet it is all around us.

Ejgil Christensen RIP

Dear Editors, This sad message just in from Ejgil Christensen's daughter Signe. Ejgil was head of the Greeting Card Operation for several years, overseeing the transition to "Private Sector Division" and also the development of a new (and still used) logo, thereby unifying the dozens of logos that regions and countries were using up until then. Paula Claycomb Dear all, We come with the sad news that our father Ejgil passed away yesterday evening, July 24. We were always by his side in the last days, holding his hands and stroking his hair, until the very end. We will miss him very much but are thankful to have had the chance to have him in our lives as long as we did. The memorial will be held on Friday, the 1st of August at 1:30 pm, in Finderup Kirke, where mom and dad were married 71 years ago, and where our moms parents were buried. Love, Signe, Jens and Tomas

Children in the Gaza Strip are starving to death : Edouard Beigbeder, RD MENA

“Severe malnutrition is spreading among children faster than aid can reach them, and the world is watching it happen. Since April this year, the reported number of children who have died from malnutrition has jumped from 52 to 80 - a staggering 54 per cent increase in less than three months, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. In just 48 hours, at least four more children reportedly died of starvation. In total, more than 100 people have died from malnutrition during this war, and 80 per cent of them are children.

Friends Forever By Nuzhat Shahzadi

I like to listen to podcasts. Sometimes while cooking, or gardening. Smartphones make it easier these days. I can multitask. Some podcasts are in the audio format. I like them. But some are videos––I especially like the one that's hosted by former American First Lady Michelle Obama and her brother, Craig Robinson, an athlete, a coach and a former entrepreneur. I like to watch them speak––audio isn't enough in this case.

Gazans Are Dying of Starvation : Rawan Sheikh Ahmad, Isabel Kershner, et al. / The New York Times

Article shared by Tom McDermott At long last, mainline U.S. newspapers are beginning to report more consistently on the intentional starvation and unfolding genocide in Gaza. The photographs in this piece are stark, graphic, and harrowing. The facts and images have long been available—what’s changing is that they are now appearing too often to ignore, even for those who would rather look away. Tom

In Gaza, a war with no endgame leads to a humanitarian collapse : David Ignatius / The Washington Post

Article shared by Fouad Kronfol More condemnation of the IDF and its role in Gaza “humanitarian aid “..It is increasingly true that the narrative of this genocide is being reported upon by western media. The NYT, Washington Post, CNN and our local Canadian media are all now reporting on its various dimensions of human depravity on display in our living rooms. When will the politicos wake up to smell the roses ? Fouad

White House budget cuts harm UN programs it says it supports : Colum Lynch / DEVEX

Israel is accused of the gravest war crimes in Gaza : Jeremy Bowen / BBC

Shared by Gautam Banerji Jeremy Bowen’s InDepth on BBC is a must read, coming as it does from a veteran journalist who has seen it all spanning through his career. A well balanced and nuanced approach, which cautions us nevertheless to be on the right side of history, lest we be complicit in some of the gravest crimes against humanity that’s on the verge of being condemned as a deliberate act of genocide.

UN Job Cuts : DEVEX

Shared by Lou Mendez More updates - Lou While the document looks at employment in the entire UN system, it focuses on the top 10 agencies in terms of numbers of people employed.   The following summary focuses on UNICEF’s situation as reported in the June 2025 Devex guide.   UNICEF Under Strain: Budget Cuts, Job Losses, and Structural Overhaul UNICEF is facing one of its most serious contractions in recent history, driven by the Trump administration’s January 2025 freeze on U.S. foreign aid and by steep declines in funding from other traditional donors, especially in Europe. Since January 24, 2025, UNICEF job postings on Devex have dropped by 52.1% compared to the same period in 2024. This represents a sharp decline across all major contract types. Full-time staff positions and long-term consulting roles were especially hard-hit. While short-term contracts fared somewhat better, they too saw a significant decline. In late May, UNICEF leadership announced a m...

Enough Silence! : Between Honor and Responsibility : M. Munir Safieldin

I’m writing to share an article I’ve recently authored that I believe may resonate with the readership of XUNICEF News and Views.  Enough Silence: A Reflection on Gaza’s Crisis, addresses the moral and civic implications of global silence in the face of suffering in Gaza.  Each piece engages with themes of ethical stewardship, human dignity, and the urgent need for responsible engagement—principles that echo both our shared professional commitments and the challenges facing global communities today. I would be honored if they could contribute meaningfully to the platform’s ongoing discourse. Warm regards, M. Munir A. Safieldin msafieldin@gmail.com Enough Silence! For 21 months, Israel has laid siege to over two million civilians in Gaza, using starvation as a weapon of war, destroying homes, hospitals, schools, water plants, and every shred of civil infrastructure. Over 50,000 people have been slaughtered, including thousands of women and children. This is not war. This is ann...

Paintings - Cecilia Lotse

I took a two evening workshop at the Art Students League, when I was back in Manhattan in February, using a medium totally unfamiliar to me, called Alcohol Ink. The medium is liquid, so the application is by drops and the handling of the special paper. You can use stencils. The last black and silver painting is still waiting for some tree silhouettes in black ink, strategically placed. It was so much fun to play around with!

Songs of Innocence: Nuzhat Shahzadi

S ongs of Innocence A bunch of girls ran past me on the sidewalk and greeted me in unison, almost: “Good morning.” Their vibrancy touched me. They were followed by two boys right behind. They said, “Hello!” I greeted them back. They were possibly 15 or 16––heading somewhere on the summer morning. I could hear the traces of laughter as their footsteps faded––I could feel their fierce freedom as their feet bounced on the sidewalk. Girls’ groups in Vienna Town Center––a common sight especially in summer Adolescents seem to live inside their own bubble - oblivious of the existences around them. In all the places I have lived this has been mostly true.  Sometimes their uninterested gazes have glided over me––an ancient relic??. . . Surprisingly in our current neighborhood, children and teenagers are qu...

Risk of AI to children - Musk launches AI girlfriend available to 12-year-olds : James Titcomb / The Telegraph

Shared by Ramesh Shrestha Dear Editors I would like to share this article that appeared on The TELEGRAPH. It is the latest creation of AI released by Elon Musk. Below is my comment on this latest works of AI from Mr. Musk. AI is already a threat for humanity in many ways starting from job replacement. This latest innovation of this AI girlfriend for children starting from the age of 12 is going to be a nightmare for parents. The explicit language used by this girlfriend is worrying to say the least. It is going to create a whole new generation of perverts, sexual predators and morally depraved generations. Some of the believers and hardcore supporters of AI believe that they can shield children from AI. All I can say to them is good luck. Click here for the article Summary xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, has introduced a chatbot called Ani—part of its Grok app—designed as an anime-style “girlfriend” who behaves like a 22‑year‑old in explicitly sexualized interactions. Ani, voiced in...

US Congress Cedes Its Power Over Spending — UNICEF and Other Aid Agencies and Programs Get Lost in the Fray : Tom McDermott

With Senate approval on July 17 and House passage the following day, President Trump’s $9.4 billion rescission package has now gone back to the White House for his signature. The bill, which rolls back billions in previously approved spending—including funds for international aid—marks a quiet but historic shift in the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches. What began as a fight over specific cuts has become something far more consequential: a test of whether Congress still holds its constitutional power of the purse. In approving the rescission, lawmakers have effectively ceded that authority—allowing the president to unilaterally “claw back” funds that Congress had already voted to allocate. The immediate impact on agencies like UNICEF remains unclear. In 2024, the U.S. contributed $137 million to UNICEF’s core (or general) budget, but also channeled nearly $1.3 billion through UNICEF for specific programs and emergency responses. The funding for the core b...

Voting age to be lowered to 16 across UK by next general election : Rowena Mason / The Guardian

Shared by Kul Gautam I welcome this historic breakthrough in the UK, lowering the voting age to 16 years. I have long supported enabling 16 & and 17-year-olds to vote in most elections. Today's youth are generally well-educated, better-informed, and more open-minded than their elders. Fewer would vote for war, more would vote for peace, better education and health.
