Bonjour
Bonjour Georges, j'espere que tu vas bien, j'en profite pour te souhaiter une merveilleuse annee 2025.
BRAVA !BRAVA ! Francesca, she truly deserves to be honoured as UN Person of the Year. Her reporting has been professional, direct, and objective throughout; despite her being vilified by many she remained true to her task and to her principles as a UN staffer.
His killing was another great shameful waste of human potential among the Palestinian people.
I would also like to congratulate the Manila Team on this very nice video initiative. I think it is a "first" in the annals of the 2025 XUNICEF Reunions which will be celebrating the 35th year anniversary of such get-togethers. Really sorry that Nadia and I will be missing this one but wish you all a great time in the Philippines.
Very encouraging development akin to the "Baby-Friendly Hospital" initiative. UNICEF should take it and run with it in other places.
Thank you for a very well written and humane article. It is just the kind of contribution we are looking for from our membership wherein we exchange ideas but also personal experiences during our respective careers. BTW, UNICEF has always been a "learning on the job" organization; you get recruited, you are assigned a cubicle; you are logged in, and that is about it for any newcomer. The probable theory is that you are paid a good salary so you must start performing from day one, regardless. Orientation and training cost time and money, and "we aint got too much of both!". We look forward to more articles of this nature from you, and hopefully, from other colleagues.
Very nice article Horst, but why so many US flags in the foreground of the Dom?

Enjoyable reading, Ken -- real life after UNICEF! Mary
Just to say thank yu for posting the announcement of the launch - the time difference makes it near to impossible for North America colleagues and hope those in Asia and Europe will join on Zoom .

As you may have noted, Cynthia McCaffrey and her team have been extremely supportive - on our part, as editors we are satisfied with the outcomes of our efforts- the icing on the cake being the historic launch at UNICEF House.

Thanks again - hope to send XUNICEF News & views a brief report.
Best regards
Sree
Your writing always radiates positivity and hope! I read carefully what message you are trying to share cause it impacts me ! Your words effortlessly uplift spirits and remind me of the inherent goodness in humanity. Keep sharing your thoughts bubu!!!
Mary, Ces and team, regret missing this Reunion . The Welcome video is lovely and we can expect that what follows will be a wonderful gettogether. Best wishes . Sree
There is still goodness out there, but we tend to forget it. Most of the times we are burdened with negativity. Thanks for the reminder of the joys and positivity in the world! So much to look forward to. Let’s celebrate life!
I somewhat agree with you, Ramesh and I don't. We are in the midst of social and technology-advancement revolution. One impacts the other and things are just different now. Good or bad is a relative way of defining this moment. Some ignorance is definitely a bliss––but some would challenge it maintaining why keep life simple if it could be made complicated??
Dear Myra, I loved reading about Lulu. It's quite a unique piece––spontaneous, creative and authentic. Many thanks.
I laughed a lot while I read your story. However, I am genuinely sorry about your accident. Hope you are fully mended by now? Please take care of your self but keep enjoying life. By the way, age is just a number, Ken . . .
Beautiful photographs, Horst! Enjoyed reading it. Please keep writing. Many thanks for sharing with us.
Really looking forward to reading it! Thank you for your review. Ana
And what about Iranian and UNRWA complicity with Hamas terrorists?
It’s heartbreaking, tragic— will remain as a stain on human conscience forever!
Do we ever learn??
In all fairness, it should be mentioned that there are winners from Social Capitalism and generous aid. Millions of poorly educated, unskilled migrants in Sweden, primarily from the Middle East and Africa have improved their standard of living even if often through a strong social safety net. They also have access to relatively good healthcare and education, even if the quality of both has declined. Many individuals in countries receiving aid have also benefited, even if they were perhaps not the intended beneficiaries. Tens of thousands of aid workers have also benefited over the years. It is not all gloomy. Advocates for social capitalism reckon these achievements justify the cost.

The reference to Spain as the country of the year refers to the economy. I do not live in Spain to avoid tax - I pay more than a third of my pension in tax here while I would pay none in Sweden. I should have added above that the GDP per capita in Sweden has declined over the past 10 years. This state of affairs has had some questioning the wisdom of social capitalism and spending more than any other country on aid, particularly as there is little, if anything, to show for it. The countries, Tanzania and Uganda, that have received most of the Swedish aid are relatively poorer today than they were when the aid started to flow. In Afghanistan most of the aid appears to have been stolen - similar problems as USAID had. Perhaps a discussion/debate around these issues would be interesting.
AI would benefit from taking a second look at Swedish social capitalism. High unemployment rate, low GDP growth, skyrocketing violent crime, nine-hundred-thousand illiterates and perhaps one and a half million, of working age, living on some form of benefits. That is a lot for a country with 11 million people and has resulted in the world's highest taxes, but not the best social services or infrastructure. I live in Spain, which was declared the country of the year (2024) by The Economist.
Sorry to hear the sad news of Kreeti Wadhawan's passing. May Almighty rest him in peace.
Was a very close family friend when we served together in Addis Ababa. Was highly professional and a very helpful person. While he was loud any bubbly at every party - his wife Veena was just opposite always quiet & serene.
We will miss a good friend and company.
President Carter's funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington on Thursday, January 9, was a deeply moving testimony to his life. Attended by all living US Presidents and with messages from former President Gerald Ford and Carter's running mate Walter Mondale (both read by their sons), the service provided a glimpse into to the integridty and also simplicity of Jimmy Carter,
Thanka, Nuzhat, for your snow stories, One feels the adventure and the dangers lurking, but more enjoyable are the moments of warmth and kindness.
Lovely stories. Did yo also encounter a Cornish hen?
Social capitalism (soziale Marktwirtschaft = social market economy) has been introduced in Germany after WWII. Article 14 of the German constitution includes that "Eigentum verpflichtet", which can translate into "ownership obliges", meaning that the use of property should be for the common good.

Well captured Dr Pavitra. Feel very proud to be part of India team. Just one addition UNICEF played a key part is in polio eradication mainly in UP and Bihar.
Thanks, brother Baquer for reminding us of these gems of quotations emphasizing peaceful coexistence, compassion, respect and tolerance. Sadly, some of the holy scriptures also contain contradictory quotations justifying violence and intolerance as documented extensively in the book "Better Angels of Our Nature..." by Stephen Pinker. It is our duty to focus on & foster the positive quotations from the scriptures, but recognizing that they also contain contrary statments which evil-doers like to quote to foment violence and hatred. Amen!
Way to Ben - we knew this book was inside your ready to jump out. Can't wait to read it.

Cheers and Congrats!
