What a captivating image. I loved all the fine details painted on the woman's face! Thx for sharing.
Absolutely beautiful (- although quite unusual...)

Where school staff were required to administer a beating, or a thrashing, to underage pupils in schools, there was a curious custom that followed. When the ‘thrashee’ stood up after the beating/thrashing, he was required to shake hands with the ‘thrasher’, as if this would absolve the thrasher from having assaulted a child. And this was thought to be part of a normal education ?
One wonders if the same things happens in Iran after a female protester has been thrashed/beaten (sometimes even to death ?) for not having worn a hijab in public ? Or would the thrasher/beater find it impossible to touch a non-related female ?

Thank you, George for sharing with us these beautiful collection of portraits. They are truly inspiring!
Great to learn about your artistic doings in Edinburgh. It certainly is an inspiring city, especially with the Festival and the Fringe. We had an xUNICEF (WAWIG) reunion there under Paul Ignatieff in 2003, and it was one of the most memorable ones. Like visiting a sculpture "Gallery" in the middle of a mountainous region, completely isolated.
Please don’t tell my wife that I was wrong, but. . . .

The first computer mouse: Was made of wood, 1963/64 by Engelbart & English and it had just one button;

First optical computer mouse: 1980 by Kirsch and Lyon independently;

First wireless computer mouse 1984 (used infra-red light); and in 1991 (Logitech MouseMan Cordless) used radio signals (no longer requiring to be line of sight).

All of this yet the optical, cordless computer mouse only became commercially available around 1998.

The reunion is an informal gathering. Why try and add too much in the way of formal things. Its charm is its informality.

Sree, your granddaughter Mala's essay is so well written that I would like to share it with a couple columnists whom I read on a daily basis (Heather Cox Richardson and Robert Hubbell). May I do so? Congratulations on her participation as representative of the Girl Scouts in next week's Summit of the Future and good luck.
Dear Kul , so true.""The UN suffers from planning disease. Any successful real-world entity does 10% planning and 90% execution (and the planning is built on the results of execution). In the UN, it's the reverse. Rather than critically examine why the SDGs are off track, and support countries to overcome these obstacles, the UN comes up with a new list of things it wants to accomplish". I agree Lomborg's strategic approach is the wisest way forward. Bilge
Dear Karin, I full agree with your statement. FXB Health and Human Rights Center at Harvard University , I am affiliated with is focussing on the rights of the migrant children. Let's stay in touch as to how we might support each other's work. Send me an email, if interested. bilge.bassani@gmail.com. bilge Bassani

Hi George, those are really impressiv portraits! I like them very much and wonder, how you did them. As a hobby-painter myself, I would like to try myself to do some portraits e. g. from family members. Are you using a picture of the person as a base? Any more details, I would appreciate very much. Greetings from Germany!
Dear colleagues and friends,
there are many ways of looking at the SDGs and at the Summit of the Future: too ambitious. too many topics. not ambitious enough. no monitoring - not correct - there is a high level meeting every summer to which countries report on their SDG performance. not implemented - not correct - many countries have SDG implementation strategies. important themes missing: yes: in the summit of the future draft pact version 3 nothing on ocean floor mining and nothing on the convention on the aged, for example...
but main issue is perhaps that given its intergovernmental nature, none of the delegates speak openly that a large number of member states are authoritarian and do not represent the people they are meant to speak for - obliquely of course UDHR and Charter are quoted, but that is a minimum and there are no references to the 9 core human rights conventions such as the CRC nor to the 13 fundamental ILO conventions such as on minimum age.
and then there are the obstructors - see Guy Ryder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpEWSDr46Hs from circa minute 29 - the pact texts were agreed in august but then reopened so the whole process now under threat. probably further watering down. for those interested see versions one - three here of the pact and accompanying texts : https://www.un.org/en/summit-of-the-future?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwi5q3BhCiARIsAJCfuZnqRTYz95henIDqVtiP7tF8yaFZtYAE2q14mDErFz-noPh91H4EBeoaAvh7EALw_wcB
