  1. Although I served UNICEF for most of my 36 year career under Maurice Pate, Henry Labouisse and Jim Grant, the retirement plaque thanking me for my services was signed by Carol Bellamy! This is because my last position as "Special Adviser" to the Executive Director was with Carol at NYHQ. Like most of the then staff I was particularly pleased to see that UNICEF finally had a woman to direct the organization after almost fifty years of existence. More so, having been Director of Personnel as my final responsibility I had exerted much effort at increasing the proportion of women in management and other senior positions, managing to bring it to 40 %. While my work with Carol was brief and limited to
a few management related activities I had followed her accomplishments over the next decade with much interest. In retrospect my take on her tenure was that she made more effort at developing the financial and internal communications aspects during her first term, with less on programmatic issues, but then developing and promoting
a number of important policies and programmes related to child rights and girls' education in her second five year
period. To date her tenure has been the longest of the three other women who followed her as EDs. and her imprint on
UNICEF the most evident. I was also pleased that after UNICEF Carol Bellamy became a Trustee of the American University of Beirut, my alma mater. Am glad to read about her accomplishments in the XUNICEF Blog.
