Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and founding member of The Elders, harshly criticized President Trump's proposed Board of Peace in an NPR interview. 

Robinson obtained a leaked copy of the charter and described it not as a peacemaking organization but as "the board of the power of one person" that is "totally bizarre." The charter makes Trump chairman in perpetuity with exclusive authority to create, modify or dissolve subsidiary bodies, invites members at his discretion, requires a billion-dollar payment for permanent membership (otherwise three-year terms), and allows Trump to choose his own successor. 

Notably, the charter makes no mention of Gaza, the territory it was originally supposed to address. She reported that since the Gaza ceasefire began, OCHA estimated 463 Palestinians have been killed and 1,269 injured as of January 15, with humanitarian aid only slightly improved and continued Israeli attacks ongoing. Robinson also noted Israel bulldozed the UNRWA office in East Jerusalem, describing these actions as attempting to undermine any possibility of a two-state solution.

Robinson stated countries are being bullied to join and warned this attempts to replace the United Nations and Security Council. Robinson acknowledged the UN Security Council needs urgent reform as it reflects 1945 power structures rather than today's multipolar world, but emphasized the need to defend the rules-based international order.
