Sudan - An Appeal : Tony Lake

Dear Friends,

I regret having to write you again about the famine and horrors caused by the civil war in Sudan - and to ask for your support of the brave, often young, Sudanese who are working on the ground to feed the famished and treat the sick and wounded in local Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs). But the disaster is at least as horrific as it was when I last wrote. And the work of the ERRs remains as brave and important… and dangerous … as ever.

I know I am bothering you at a when time we are giving thanks for all we have. But it is also a time to reflect on all that so many others do not.

And I am beyond angry that progress in Gaza (let us hope) is not matched by practical progress in resolving the still larger crisis in Sudan.

Attached are three recent articles. One is a readable and smart piece by former US and UN diplomat Jeff Feltman on the current situation in Sudan. Another is from The New Humanitarian on the scope of the suffering as each side in the war hinders assistance efforts by UN and other relief agencies. Exacerbated, of course, by a despicable loss of American aid. And the third is a column by Nick Kristof on Saturday about Sudan and the ERRs. Not surprisingly, it is excellent.

Please note the shout outs, in each article, for the ERRs. Indeed, they were nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and were just awarded a prestigious RAFTO human rights prize in Oslo.

The welcomed contributions a number of you have made to the ERRs, and will make, are of course dwarfed by the needs. But please imagine how much every single dollar of help can mean to a parent in Sudan who is reduced to giving hot water to her crying child, because that is all she can do to reduce the stomach pains of the suffering child’s extreme hunger.

So could you please go to the link below to the Kristof article and donate, using the DONATE button on the upper right as an expression of admiration and support for the brave Sudanese working in the ERRs to save their neighbors. And more: to make a huge difference to at least some of the innocent victims of the greed and cruelty of the perpetrators of this disaster.

Your contributions will be matched four-fold by generous donors and are tax deductible.

In hope, Tony L

  1. Why are the wealthy countries that have aided and abetted this war not held responsible?
