Summary:
Dr. David M. Malone, the sixth Rector of the United Nations University, passed away on November 24, 2025 in Victoria, Canada at age 71. Born in Ottawa on February 7, 1954, Malone enjoyed a distinguished career as diplomat, academic and international civil servant.
He joined the Canadian diplomatic service at 21, with early postings in Cairo, Sudan and Libya, and served as Canada's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN (1990-1994), leading the successful campaign for Canada's 1999-2000 Security Council seat.
From 1998-2004, he led the International Peace Academy (now International Peace Institute), making it the unofficial "salon" of the UN community and producing influential work on the Responsibility to Protect concept and civil war economics.
He served as Canada's High Commissioner to India (2006-2008), President of Canada's International Development Research Centre (2008-2013), and UNU Rector (2013-2023) with rank of UN Under-Secretary-General.
As UNU Rector, he established the UNU Centre for Policy Research, advanced gender equity initiatives closing substantial parity gaps, and championed strategic shifts toward policy research with practical impact. He was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by Japan in 2023 for strengthening Japan-UN relations.
