Report - Online Town Hall with Francesca Albanese by Robert Cohen

I just got out of a virtual town hall meeting of UN staff and former staff with Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

She is a giant of moral courage, deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, who has focussed the light of international law on Israel’s genocide and demanded the world —first and foremost, the US — put an end to it.

Our questions mostly focussed on our responsibilities as part of the UN to boldly speak out while honoring UN regulations regarding staff impartiality.

Over two thousand UN staff and former staff have already joined the recently created the unofficial, unprecedented UN Staff for Gaza (UN4Gaza) association, which sponsored today’s uplifting town hall.

We should have done this a year or two ago, when genocide began clearly unfolding before our eyes — but better late than never.

May our voices reach the ears and consciences of the governments and leaders meeting at the General Assembly in New York these next two weeks.

May they find the courage to end their complicity and override the US veto in the Security Council and take concrete measures to end the barbaric war crimes being committed against the Palestinian people!

Gratitude and respect, Francesca Albanese!
