Voting age to be lowered to 16 across UK by next general election : Rowena Mason / The Guardian

Shared by Kul Gautam

I welcome this historic breakthrough in the UK, lowering the voting age to 16 years. I have long supported enabling 16 & and 17-year-olds to vote in most elections.

Today's youth are generally well-educated, better-informed, and more open-minded than their elders.
Fewer would vote for war, more would vote for peace, better education and health.

If voting were allowed at 16, the UK would not have voted for Brexit; the US would repeal antiquated gun laws and reduce the epidemic of gun violence, including in schools.

Hope many more countries emulate the UK's example.

Summary
The UK government has announced that the voting age will be lowered to 16 nationwide before the next general election, fulfilling a Labour manifesto promise. This change, already in place for regional elections in Scotland and Wales, aligns the UK with a small group of countries that allow voting at 16. The reform is part of a broader democratic overhaul that includes expanded voter ID options, enhanced protections against foreign interference, tougher rules on political donations, and legal safeguards for candidates and electoral staff.
