Birth registration is an essential prerequisite for legal identity and the fulfilment of children’s rights. By registering children at birth and providing a birth certificate – a passport to lifelong protection – their exposure to rights violations are minimized and their access to essential services ensured.
On the occasion of UNICEF's 78th anniversary, we are pleased to release
a new report with updated global and regional estimates on birth registration as well as an overview of progress toward achieving universal birth registration for every child.
| An estimated 77 per cent – or over 500 million – children under five have had their births registered in the last five years, reflecting notable strides in legal identity worldwide. Despite this progress, it still leaves 150 million children under five unregistered, with the greatest burden in sub-Saharan Africa which is home to half of the world’s unregistered children (90 million).
