History - 75 Years of Commitment for Children : Kyungsun Kim / UNICEF Thailand

Report shared by Kul Gautam

From Kyungsum Kim
Dear Kul,

Thank you and other former DEDs for taking up this timely and much needed initiative.

We at Thailand CO have been feeling the same need. Indeed, UNICEF has a glorious past in Thailand.

So we published our @75 anniversary history book and handed them to our donors at the Blue Carpet Gala at the end of last year.

It’s in the e-book format on our website too. However, I will ask our communications team to create a tab in our website so that it’s easier to find and more visible.

We can also make it a prerequisite in the induction of the new staff.

Have you received a copy? If you haven’t, I would love to send you one. OED has received the book so hopefully it will reinforce your message to ED Russell.

You continue to be our inspiration and I feel lucky to be in your network. I also take this chance to thank you for the valuable advice you shared at our Nov RMT.

Please let me know next time you plan to come to Thailand so that I can organize a meeting between you and Khun Anand.

Warmest regards, KK

Bravo, dear Kyungsun!

Thank you for sharing with me the pdf version of the "UNICEF Thailand 75th Anniversary Book".

This is precisely the kind of book or documentation of the glorious history of UNICEF in each country that we had in mind when 8 of us former Deputy Executive Directors wrote to Executive Director Catherine Russell with our suggestions for recalling, preserving, updating and disseminating the momentous milestones of UNICEF's proud history and legacy in each country, regionally and globally.

Your coffee table book beautifully captures the most interesting and impactful events, projects, personalities involved, and results achieved by UNICEF in partnership with the government and other stakeholders in Thailand - decade by decade - from 1948 to 2023.

It also serves as a bridge between the past and the future with insightful comments by UNICEF's highly respected Goodwill Ambassador Khun Anand Panyarachun and the voices of the new generation of UNICEF Thailand's youngest child and youth advisors. In facts, figures, photographs, charts and graphs it shows how Thailand has progressed towards achieving the goals of the Summit for Children, MDGs and SDGs, and the challenges still remaining.

I am also glad to see your documentation of how Thailand's experience has helped other countries of the region and the world, and how Thailand has benefitted from sharing the good examples of other countries. I have personally been a witness and participant in some of these highly fruitful exchanges.

I recall UNICEF Thailand and EAPRO collaborated closely when we produced the excellent booklet: "UNICEF in Thailand: A Journey of Fifty Years" on the occasion of the UNICEF's 50th anniversary when I was Regional Director at EAPRO. You have done one better in producing this beautiful 75th anniversary book.

Yes, please do post a link to this book, and perhaps the earlier one as well in your office website with a clearly visible tab referring to UNICEF history. And yes, please make this a required reading as part of the orientation of new staff members and share it with our key counterparts.

I trust UNICEF EAPRO and HQ too will share this as a sample for other offices to emulate as they prepare to commemorate the 80th anniversary of UNICEF.

Once again, congratulations to you and your team, dear Kyungsun. I am so proud of you — and immensely grateful too.

With warm regards -

Kul
