Agree with you, Ken! The moral of our story . . .
Ken Gibbs commented on "In The Land of Baobab and Flame Trees by Nuzhat Shahzadi"
Yesterday
In 1979, I had the good fortune to work with a WHO consultant who had been living at the end of the runway at the Entebbe Airport, at the time of the Israeli Commando Raid to release the Jewish hostages taken from an Air France jet liner, which had ended in Entebbe. He had heard a commotion coming from the airport so he went outside to check with his chowkidar from whom he asked what was happening ? Chowkidar's response while leaning on his spear, was, simply, "Monsieur, Je pense c'est la revolution". Don't under-rate the utility of a spear. . . . . .

Perhaps the gratitude should go to the taxpayers in northern Europe who paid most of our salaries and pensions.

I am sure there is merit to what you are highlighting. However, during my close to 20 years in the development sector in countries in West Africa, Middle East and Asia, I can very clearly pick out developments influenced or catalyzed by UNICEF that changed millions of life for better. For sure, we can argue that we could have changed more life that what we did. But, I will find it hard to accept that those developments would have taken place without the UNICE stimuli.

I used your "check"/test" Detlef. I used my pension as income, the number of people was two and true enough, I am among the world's richest 1% - UNICEF was very good to us.

Prenons rdv...

I think you may be be underestimating the global impact of a US withdrawal from WHO and the overseas health projects funded by US institutions like CDC and NIH. The US supports thousands of overseas health research projects and spends some ,$12 billion annually. If another pandemic occurs, far more would be needed. A US withdrawal from international health would be a dramatic blow to global health.

Its certainly alarming for the US .. But globally, won't be as alarming. There are several other nations with health expertise who can make decisions and mange health care independent of the US. The COVID pandemic proved that the selfish US policies on vaccine distribution did not affect every country. India manufactured its own and donated vaccines to developing countries , free in some cases. Yes, we sympathize with US for Trump's choice of RFK Jr.

If we were just adequately paid there would not have been so much corruption in the recruitment process.

While we were adequately paid, am not sure that UNICEF staff can be considered among the 1%.. My plumber makes $200 K a year easy and my friend's daughter drives a truck and makes up to $300K .

Nov 19, 2024
Thank you Paula for keeping the lights on to this important aspect of our times when so few seem to care about the adverse effects of these explosives, especially on children. The current crises in Gaza, Palestine, Sudan and others attest to the sad fact that such instruments of war continue to make victims , especially vulnerable ones, in many places aroiund the world. Alfred Nobel must be really turning in his tomb !!!

Well said James and most appropriate as UNICEF and the world celebrate Universal Children's Day on 20 November.. It is clear the world has become enured to the statistics that are published daily on children killed, injured, maimed or become orphans. What is going to finally bring about a cessation to such inhumanity? THAT will be the question tomorrow.

For a more comprehensive and updated report I strongly recommend to readers to go back and listen to the interview of our ex-colleague Sigrid Kaag on the situation in Gaza. It is one of the best I have read in recent times. She is logical, rational, knowledgeable and straight forward and manages to connect the horrible aspects with doses of hope and positiveness.

She looks like a regular and nice Jane Doe, a soccer Mom and like anyone's best cousin, yet it is hard to fathom how she manages to spew such vitriol and to have such vicious views on issues. It will be interesting to see how she confronts her "colleagues" in the UNGA or the UNSC when sensitive subjects are discussed.

Ramesh g, A soft and subtle reminder for realignment of development assistance when assistance, no doubt, many a times bypassed the original intended groups. High time for UNICEF, above all to heed your comments, more of the testimonial content for course correction .Working with UNICEF, without flattering ourselves was a worthy tag that brought us credibility, acceptance and pride for being apolitical organisation in a world mired in politics. We never worked for governments, we worked with them — for children.
Warm regards.

Thank you Tom for this comprehensive picture of Elise Stefanik. As a New Yorker, we've heard and read a lot about her. As with the other Trump appointees, she is unqualified and will surely not enhance or promote U.S. interests or other important issues to come forward in the U.N. body. I guess it's a "we shall see" situation.

Thanks, dear Tom, for this fascinating account. I did not know some of the important details like the involvment of Eleonore Roosevelt, John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Do not recall seeing these details in Maggie Black's memorable history of UNICEF. You really keep a treasure trove of UNICEF history unlike anyone I know.
