FOGGS Peacemaking Reflection Group Calls for Immediate End to War and Arms Embargo - Add Your Support

Shared by Margherita Amodeo, Niloufar Pourzand, Ellen Tolmie, Yoriko Yasukawa, and Carina Prakke
Dear Colleagues, former UN system staff members,

One year on from the appalling terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas, many of us are dismayed at the continuation of horrific violence against civilians in Gaza as well as the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon. Faced with this situation, several participants in the Peacemaking Reflection Group (PRG) felt that we cannot remain silent but should come out with a shared document, this time a Call to the international community (https://www.foggs.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/PRG-Call-to-end-ME-violence-20-Oct-2024.pdf) to do everything possible to put an immediate end to this war, including an arms embargo on Israel.

While we are no longer on active duty in the UN system, most of us still maintain diverse and extensive networks of contacts with people who can influence action by governments and other actors that can help achieve this goal. We therefore hope that as many of you as possible can sign this call and circulate it as broadly as possible, encouraging others to sign and use the document to push for action by those who are in a position to make a positive difference.

Please use this online form (http://bit.ly/PRG-on-Gaza-Lebanon-War) by 23 October Noon (Brussels time) to express your support, so that we may publish the statement on the 24th, which is UN Day. The document with the signatures collected by the deadline will be sent to all signatories and will be circulated widely, hopefully with your help too.

Kind regards,
Yoriko Yasukawa

  1. Good initiative! If only one half our 1,000 plus members of XUNICEF sign on it will be a major act of popular support to the stopping of this catastrophic situation for children in Gaza/Palestine and Lebanon. Please engage !!!

  2. Dear Yoriko and colleagues,
Thanks for this well-crafted statement that is very balanced, principled and timely, if not a bit overdue.
I have signed the petition and am sharing with a few other former UN/UNICEF colleagues who might be interested in signing it.
Let's hope that it will have some marginal impact, though many such appeals in the past have gone unheeded.
