Political-macho lords and war lords are becoming the role models. Young minds are impressionable––sense of immense-mindless power isn't easy to overlook for many/some. However, I follow the the work of Zen Z global leaders/pioneers who are contributing to our societies and influencing others––Greta, on climate change issues, Malala for girls' education and rights, David Hogg for anti-gun violence, etc. They and young pioneers like them may change the world––one day!

We humans are often born with a sense of superiority. This feeling can be based on color, race, religion, social status, wealth, popularity, education, which university we went to, which school district our kids go to, or just physical strength. We always seem to find something to make us feel better than others. It seems to be part of human nature. However, if we make a collective and conscious effort to be mindful of equality, we can potentially save humanity. All we can do is practice mindfulness and hope that future generations will continue the effort. Very timely and thoughtful writing. Thank you, Nuzhat.

As the one who started the Sudan Country Office I am very troubled by the spiral of violence and wreckage that the country and its people have been witnessing in recent years. For many decades the civil disturbances were centred around the North vs the South divide, but now that South Sudan has become a separate country, it is a such a shame to see that the conflict appears to be between the Nilotic and western desertic tribes, to the detriment of all Sudanese. One would hope that the external supporters of the conflict would let the Sudanese solve their own divisions through compromise and understanding. Pity the children of Sudan !
When sending the above comment I could not but note that it seems the DHR has been "re-baptized "as the Division of People and Culture . As a former Director of Personnel I found this newest appellation a very odd one and wonder what was the justification for it. For the record this organizational unit has changed its formal title from the original Division of Administration, to Division of Personnel, then to Division of Human Resources and now to Division of People and Culture....an interesting evolution in management toponomy !
I am not sure whether it is more appropriate to congratulate Mr. Beigbeder or to feel sorry for him in his new assignment. From Beirut to Amman is like stepping from the" frying pan to the fire'. While he must have had his hands more than full dealing with the mess in Lebanon, he must now deal with multiple and more complex messes in Gaza/Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Libya, to name just a few. As a native of the region in which I served for some 20 years in Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan and the Mideast Section in NYHQ I wish him sincerely all that is best for his success. At the same time I wish Adele Khodr a well deserved retirement and look forward to her joining the XUNICEF network. She is to be congratulated for being an outspoken RD and a worthy successor to a series of outstanding RD's in MENA.

it appears the offboarding from UNICEF these days is quite organised - more than I have ever seen - to avoid this very confusion. Credit to GSSC in Budapest who are very transactional and not whimsical.

I had the same experience with what used to be called PAR (Personal Advances and Recoveries). UNICEF wanred to deduct 7900 Usd from me. It took me several months of hard work to HQ to admit their errors.

The next PAR statement showed 2500 USD in my favour. The note said that any dues would be immediately deducted, and any entitlements immediately paid.

I went to the operations officer to cash in my entitlements. He immediately said this was an error. I pointed out that Unicef must not apply rules and regulations differently, depending on whether something benefits the staffmember or the organization. He smiled and said that everything will be ok.

You might be able to precipitate matters by establishing, before you separate from the organisation, the date by which all 'final' debts will have been presented to you; by asking for an undertaking from Finance, New York, to this end, perhaps using the terminology 'Statute of Limitations' to concentrate their attention ? Experience tends to suggest that this approach might stir the Finance staff out of their comfort zone. Whatever the case, Good Luck to you. . . . .

Very nice and informative article, thank you. I was once, in one of the numerous army checkpoints in South Sudan - sometime in 1983 - I was asked for the color of my eyes. I did not answer. The soldier wrote “yellow”.
