AROUND THE WORLD, CHILDREN ARE BEING FORCED FROM THEIR HOMES WITH UNACCEPTABLE AND ALARMING FREQUENCY At the end of 2022, the number of displaced children reached a record of 43.3 million, including 29.7 million internally displaced children. Close to half the world’s children live in countries at extremely high risk of climate hazards – nearly a quarter of these countries also have a high proportion of displacement. While the well-being of many children on the move is under threat, they too often remain invisible in data and left out of pertinent global discussions.   IDAC continues to sound the alarm on the urgent need to improve data and statistics for children on the move and facilitate solutions to these data gaps. It has just launched a pair of reference documents that take a deep dive into the terminologies and data sources related to this population, and its latest edition of On the Move, In the Know, IDAC’s newsletter, highlights the most recent numbers on children on the move and what’s being done to improve data on these children. IDAC'S LATEST ISSUE BRIEFS CHILDREN ON THE MOVE: KEY TERMS, DEFINITIONS AND CONCEPTS This resource promotes a conceptual understanding of children on the move and unpacks key migration and displacement terms that relate to children. It shares statistics on specific subgroups of children on the move and calls attention to those that continue to be missing from the data. DATA AND STATISTICS FOR CHILDREN ON THE MOVE: ESSENTIAL SOURCES AND GOOD PRACTICES This brief maps out existing data sources on migrant and displaced children and identifies opportunities to improve the data on this group. An extensive list of databases and resource hubs provides details on where to find child-specific migration and displacement data. Access the briefs ENSURING CHILDREN ON THE MOVE ARE PART OF GLOBAL DATA DIALOGUES  To raise the visibility of the ongoing vulnerability of children on the move and highlight their absence from the evidence base, IDAC has continued to ensure that the needs of migrant and displaced children are heard at relevant dialogues and high-level forums and end this marginalized population’s statistical invisibility. EVIDENCE IN CRISIS: EXPANDING DATA ON UKRAINIAN REFUGEE CHILDREN Since February of 2022, the war in Ukraine has internally displaced 1.1 million children and forced over 2 million children to flee the country – yet data on the situations of these children are far from complete. Several IDAC partners are carrying out vital initiatives to address the data gaps and bolster the policy response.  PRIORITY ISSUE: CLIMATE CHANGE AND CHILDREN ON THE MOVE As climate hazards escalate, many children will be forced to leave home in order to secure their right to school, shelter, food and other elements critical to their well-being. IDAC is seeking contributions that highlight research work and data-related initiatives centred on upholding the rights of children migrating or displaced in a changing climate, to be featured in its upcoming Data InSIGHT #2 report. Fill out our questionnaire to showcase your work!
