Summary: The article describes the alarming escalation of violence, rights violations, and humanitarian crises facing children worldwide, including in Gaza, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, and other conflict-affected contexts. It outlines Canada’s past and potential leadership roles in promoting human rights, humanitarian law, and child protection, but argues that Canada’s current foreign policy and aid commitments are falling short of what is needed. It calls on the Canadian government to increase humanitarian and development funding, champion accountability for grave violations against children, and show stronger global leadership in protecting children’s rights.
Quotes:“Across the globe, children are being killed, injured, abducted, starved and denied an education on a horrifying scale.”
“Canada has long claimed to champion human rights and a rules-based international order, yet its actions have not kept pace with its rhetoric.”
“Now is the time for Canada to step up, increase its support for children in crisis, and help stop the war on children.”

So true and so depressing. As if the killing of children is not bad enough, today’s Al Jazeera published an important statement byUNICEF and ILO on another aspect of concern which is the large number of child labour still occurring in the world. This “double whammy “on the situation of children makes a mockery of the CRC and other international and national promulgations about the special status of children and what is being done about improving their lives.
