For all Those Who Never Left - XUNICEF Vacancy Announcement (3): The Editors

FOR ALL FORMER STAFFERS,

AND THOSE WHO HAVE SIMPLY NEVER LEFT

At XUNICEF, Editors are our strategic visionaries, operational magicians and unpaid volunteers of destiny. Their sacred duty is to maximize the residual talents, institutional memory and strongly held opinions of former staff, in accordance with world-class journalistic management practices, aspirational goals, overlapping priorities and the occasional strong email.

Together, we produce News & Views on children, development, humanitarian action and whatever else emerges during the meeting.

Our Ever-Evolving Reality

Over the past eight years, our operating environment has evolved rapidly, largely without our consent. It is now dynamic, complex and frequently confusing. As our global footprint has expanded, we have grown to over 1,000 members in more than 100 countries, including some that we no longer can find on the map.

This growth has required bold thinking, flexible adaptation and a surprising number of reminder emails.

The Mission (Such as It Is)

To implement our own  personal Strategic Plans, achieve their overly ambitious targets, further extend our already very broad coverage, sharpen its already super-tight focus, and manage rising and still optimistic expectations, we are seeking qualified, diverse and moderately tech-competent talent to strengthen the legendary Ties That Bond Us.

If you are passionate about making a difference and can still tell the difference between “Reply” and “Reply All,” we urge you to apply.

Before you continue, remember that we planned to walk together, as Bruce S. once said:

The Fine Print (Which Is Actually the Main Text)

Category Type:
Anyone with a connection to XUNICEF, UNICEF, or a UNICEF story they like to tell. No age limit.

Workload:
One virtual meeting per week, limited to one hour by policy and extended by anecdotes. Plus a rotating role as Editor of the Week, during which you briefly relive your working years and then lie down.

Position Level:
E5–E6. These are theoretical responsibility levels inherited from a previous era. Their meaning has been lost, but their presence is reassuring.

Entitlements:
None. Absolutely none. But you may experience a warm sense of belonging and the occasional nostalgic thrill.

Salary:
A hypothetical equivalent of the salary grade you would have liked to have upon leaving UNICEF, adjusted to your current place of work and the cost of living.

Duty Station:
Your current location. Den, living room, bedroom, kitchen, garden, or that special chair where you read newsletters very carefully.

References:
We confirm each other’s credibility collectively, based on vibes and shared trauma.

Why XUNICEF?

  • Rejoin a global network of former and current UNICEF staff who all remember the rules, even if the rules have changed.

  • Work in a diverse, inclusive environment located conveniently close to your fridge.

  • Continue advancing a multilateral, peaceful world where all children enjoy their rights under the CRC, and where acronyms are still spoken fluently.

APPLY NOW!!!

(No deadline. But we are already late.)

NB. (PLEASE READ, WE BEG YOU)

We must now address the elephant in the room.

While we deeply cherish our colleagues who retired 25–30 years ago and bring unparalleled historical perspective, we are experiencing a slight imbalance. Specifically, too many editors remember fax machines intimately.

We urgently seek newer talent to carry this blog and News & Views into the future. Ideal candidates:

  • Retired no more than ten years ago

  • Can open PDFs without assistance

  • Do not print emails “just in case”

  • Know that Zoom is not a passing phase

For succession planning. For sustainability. For the children.
