"Fix this damn thing" : Colum Lynch / DEVEX

The UN's Summit of the Future is scheduled to begin on Friday, but what was hoped to be one of its main output documents, the Pact for the Future, was blocked on Thursday by Russia and a coalition of autocratic governments who opposed language protecting human rights, gender equality and partnerships with civil society. The 'Liked-minded group' includes Cuba, China, Eritrea, Russia, Syria, and Venezuela. Pakistan, also a member of the group objected to parts of the Pact that would strengthen the UN's role in global crises including climate catastrophes and pandemics. Saudi Arabia also objected to language on the dangers of fossil fuels.

"The Future Summit provides U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres with his best last attempt to reform multilateralism and build an enduring legacy, as the coming years mark the search for a new U.N. leader. "

"The Summit of the Future was supposed to lay out a plan for the future of international cooperation, but instead of looking to the future, it is weighed down by the crises of the present."

Powerful countries like the U.S., China, France, Russia, and the U.K. are not sending their leaders to the summit.

There is also deep division over how to handle gang violence in Haiti with the US pushing for a UN peacekeeping force, which is opposed by China and others.
